Roger Goodell on the draft speed

I'm from the days when I had to hope the local paper had the draft results in the sports section or I had to wait until Street n Smith's issue was at the newstand. Now it's a spectacle.

Make it one day event.
9 hours.

Picks will be fast and furious but that's the point -- smart front offices operate under pressure and succeed, and the weak, stupid, brainless, empty-headed front offices suffer the consequences.

Get rid of the current clown and gong show -- it is saturated with nonsense, gibberish, gobbledygook with talking idiots who like to hear themselves talk, culminating with an over commercialization of b.s.

Teams have lost their draft pick, because they didn’t get the card in on time while taking phone calls. The first round is fine timewise.
sounds like a team front office problem, not a NFL problem that your FO works slow.

10 minutes is not enough time when you’re on the phone trying to make a trade. You definitely can lose your pic by not getting your card in on time. No teams need this time. Especially in the first round.
it shouldn't even take 10 mins.... phones should be ringing 1-2 spots before you pick..

Find something else to do between pics so you don’t get aggravated. what you never made a last second phone call lol 10 minutes. First round is just fine. 15, this is the NFL first round picks matter.

never been in a front office spot but if i did, i wouldn't wait till the last min to call the team i want to trade with.

I think for most of the 1st round it didn't take much time for the pick to be in. Took them longer to buildup to announcing the pick.

I understand that, but you don’t know who’s being drafted. There are a lot of surprises out there. All of a sudden, the guy you wanted shows up because the team didn’t take him. You need to make that phone call and try to get him. That’s the 10 minutes.

Wouldn’t have as many busts , if they had more time lol I don’t know why people complain, oh it’s not your money that’s why why

absolutely no chance. The NFL has made this into an event making millions of dollars. They arent rushing through this in one day.

Is that the problem. Teams are taking too long? 10 minutes each requires 320 minutes to get to all 32 picks. That's 5 hours and 20 minutes, not including the delay to start the clock on the 1st pick. So in reality many teams don't even take the 10 minutes they have already. Last night they started about 8:10 eastern time and were done by about 11:30. That's 3 hrs and 20 minutes. Not too bad.

I am not sure what Roger means anyway. If he means the overall draft is too long then cutting the time to 7 minutes will help. But if he is talking about how the viewer perceives the draft, then they need to get the picks in and announce them right away. Some picks they delay for commercials or other NFL related nonsense. The whole thing is too theatrical, IMO. Its just one more thing that is so unlike what football used to be.

Maybe they should have 32 GMs sitting around a big round table. Or make it a game show competition. They can ring a bell and all 32 GMs run to the commissioner with a card with a name on it. The first one to Goodell get his pick. Then do it 31 more times until everyone has had a chance to take one player. This might be a way to get Jerry out of the GM job because he would surely be last if he could even run 32 times and live.

Seriously, one thing they can do is make the 1st team picking make a pick right away for declare a trade. The Titans had to know who they were taking or whether they would trade down a long time ago. There is no need for the first team to take 10 or 7 minutes to make their selection.

Just do not make the draft 4 days to make each session shorter. I can see someone wanting a show where the first 10 picks are made one days and the rest of the first round would be made on another day.
