Hey Guys and Gals...
My daughter got a ride from the mall tonight from one of her friend's grandfather, who I met tonight for the first time. When he found out that I'm a born & raised Cowboy fan, he (we'll call him Stan) told me this story.
Stan grew up not really knowing about football, he grew up just outside Yankee Stadium. He did see Bob Hayes while at Florida A&M, set the world record in the 100 yard dash in 1962. But a couple years later, got sent off to Vietnam to serve in the Army, to the furthermost upriver outpost in his sector. The conditions were horrible, and all of their supplies, ammo and food had to be flown in by helicopter. They would notice however that especially around the holidays that their rations would be cut short. Instead of 6 cases of beer or soda they would only get 2. Instead of 6 Christmas turkeys, only 3 would arrive and always with the legs missing. In the meantime all of the supply sergeants were getting fatter and fatter. One afternoon a young lieutenant by the name of Staubauch arrived. Stan said that he had heard that this lieutenant had won the Heisman Trophy, but knew nothing else about him. Lieutenant Staubauch had heard of these army men who were serving so far away from the other outposts and were aware of their supply shortages. Stan said that after Staubauch arrived, instead of 6 cases of beer or soda, they got 12. Instead of 6 turkeys, they got 12...all with their legs. And throughout the time that Stan was there, Staubauch always made sure that they were well taken care of. Stan told me that at that time he became a huge Cowboys fan.

Roger the Dodger...Still my favorite Cowboy of all time. Great Player and an even greater Human being!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing this awesome story!!!!!

:starspin

I just loved that story. Thanks for sharing.
So glad Staubach is ours.

Staubach is the reason I'm a Cowboys fan. He set the bar high and defined what it means to be QB for America's Team.

Exactly why I am a Cowboys fan....

And, to me, this is why Roger Staubach is the greatest Dallas Cowboys quarterback of all time. He was a winner on the field and off of it. He's every man that we hope to be and we hope our sons will be.

I am not sure what a navy Lieutenant....which I believe is called an Ensign...would have anything to do with the Army...They are 2 different entities...with 2 different supply lines....atleast that is the way it was when I was in the Army way back when

That hit me too. Navy man with the wrong rank insignia is coordinating Army supply lines?

Roger was in the Navy Supply corps (due to his color blindness he could not be an officer in the command line of a ship) and was a LT (jg). I believe he was in charge of seeing to it that the NAVY which supplied that base got all the necessary material to the Army post. So he would DEFINITELY had input about supply sargeants trying to short change the troops. Not to mention that Roger was GOD's son in the Navy due to his football career. HE could quietly talk right to an Admiral about something like that.

My brother played baseball with his son. Roger shook his hand after game and said good game. This is a class act. Aikman is as well. Will people say Romo is after hes gone? He does seem like it. Win or lose Ill take Romo.

Is it possible in being even more proud of Roger Staubach than I already am because the middle of my chest is starting to hurt? :( :)

Awsome story. I went to high school right down the street from Yankee Stadium. I wonder if I ever bumped into Stan?

A friend of my dad played with Staubach at the Naval Academy. He used to like to show me the cleat marks in his arm from when Roger stood on him once. :D
