Roger Staubach

I first met Roger at an autograph signing his Rookie year. The Rookie picture with a personal message signature along with Landry’s autograph on my Super Bowl program are my most cherished Cowboys memorabilia.

I watch very little college ball. If you asked me who my favorite college team was, I'd say Navy, because Roger Staubach.

I watched the entire Army/Navy game yesterday, because Roger Staubach.

He came down for an autograph session when I was a kid in the 70s....my dad had to work and by the time he took me to Sears, he was gone....I cried like a baby....my dad felt awful. We got home and my mom signed Roger's name on my football.....she misspelled it, but it made me real happy.....I wish I still had it.....I miss her....

Roger would hate the way ya'll have accepted mediocrity.

Roger didn't embrace moral victories and participation trophies like ya'll have.

Roger was all about winning, while ya'll.... well, as long as everyone has fun, right?

To accept something means you have control over how it comes to you....the only thing "We all" accept is we have no bearing on the team other than being a fan of it. Roger is also a fan so he is part of "Ya'll" you might direct this at the owner and GM and it would mean what your needing it to mean.

Just watched his NFL story again....what an awesome person! He's the reason I love the Cowboys and will dispute anyone that disses them.....I've met many numerous players, but never Roger.....its on my bucket list.
I was a big Green Bay fan. Bart Starr. Then I went in the military. After I watched Roger plays first game. I’ve been a fan since. Captain America

Who the hell excepts mediocrity. We don’t except it make no mistake about that. We find a way to live with it.

I don't stop expecting better just because things don't work out.

You buckle up and try and do better the next season, but you can't be satisfied with anything less than a Championship. That's loser mentality.
Yeah but you agree with tanking lol

If you're out of the playoffs with 3 or 4 games left then losing only helps set up your future.

I'm not okay with tanking from the get go, but if you're in a situation like the Jags or Texans right now. Where your season is over already. Then winning does nothing but hurt their draft stock.

im curious.... do you think the Jets ACCEPT mediocrity? The Browns? The Jags? They are all firing and hiring coaches, adding and dropping players, making trades EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Just because a team cant seem to become a winner doesnt mean they accept it. The salary cap changed things forever. Some of you just refuse to see the reality that came with that Salary Cap.
From SBI to SB 33 there were 13 different teams that won the SB.
The next 22 SB winners there were 14 different teams to wina SB, and that is very skewed due to the Pats and all of their wins. Face it, teams suck, come out of nowhere, win a title then almost immediately disappear. The Eagles came out of nowhere and won one the have sucked since. Are they an organization that simply wont tolerate mediocrity? How bout the Rams? Last place one year, next year won a SB. Is that because the front office simple decided to not accept mediocrity?

I agree that no one is accepting it but there are franchises who make a greater effort. And continuing spinning the wheel in front office and coaching staff.

Unfortunately we’ve retained the one -two combo (GM and VP) constant throughout this era . But wonder why results haven’t ultimately changed.

And in Cap era teams are able to turn it around faster and why so many more teams have at least made a championship game appearance with only 5 teams coming up short.

Since 1996 27 out of 32 teams have at least appeared in a conference championship game.

That’s true but the flip side is you have coaches and players playing for their jobs.

It’s difficult to tell everyone to lose. Normally it doesn’t matter and you lose anyway.

Allow me to tell you my Roger story and it is well worth the read.

His first commercial real estate venture was a group of office buildings on 635 at Hillcrest and we had just started a new company and we're his first tenants in one of the two buildings. Once they filled out the offices, they had a welcoming party for all of the people that worked in the buildings. Roger would be hosting and joined by Cliff Harris.

My oldest son was 8 at the time and his two favorite sports figures were Roger and Harvey Martin, who I had taken him to meet and they talked Star Wars for almost 10 minutes while he signed autographs, what a big kid.

The reception was in the other building so I walked over and just as I walked in there stands Roger with his hand out. I shake his hand and move on as the line is forming but as the party wears on, I get the chance to chat with him for only a couple of minutes. I tell him that my son is his biggest fan and imitates him out in the front yard with me striking Roger poses as he makes passes and has even worked on Roger's jump pass. He laughs and asks his name and I tell him Josh. He does not make a note of it and doesn't have a name keeper walking around with him. Needless to say I am a celebrity at home that night, at least with my oldest son, because he got to shake the hand that shook Roger's hand.

The next morning, the receptionist calls me up to the front and there is a young lady up there with an envelope addressed to me and she tells me that Roger enjoyed meeting me last night and wanted Josh to have this. I am speechless as I open it and there is an autographed 8 x 10 of Roger signed To Josh, Keep those jump passes coming, Roger.

I was a nobody, not the owner of the company, just a working guy in one of his buildings and from a short few minutes he remembered my name and my son's name and remembered the jump pass. I brought that home and not only was I a hero with my wife, Roger was with her as well and she never watched him play the same way again.

Roger embodied what I wanted all sports "heroes" to be as I had grown up as a kid only to find many had feet of clay when I was an adult. I think he is more responsible for the legion of Cowboys fans and the America's Team label than any person ever with the team, including Landry. Lilly might have been the #1 draft pick and Mr. Cowboy but to me Roger Staubach will always be Mr. Cowboy.

A Football Life got this thread started, make sure you see the one on Drew Pearson for another good Roger story. He was more than just Drew's QB.

How do you think the Lions felt. Winning the first game. How do you think the Cowboys felt the first game of the season against Tampa Bay. That’s it off the six game winning streak maybe five. Sorry I totally disagree with you. There’s many ways victories. Are motivation tools

I played sports, never close to a pro level, but motivation at any level doesnt result in better performance. At the NFL level, the game is somewhat cerebral. Motivation doesnt mean you run better routes, it wont make dak make better passes. It might give you a real quick burst of energy at kick off, but that isnt sustainable for the game. BY the way... I have no idea what you just said...lol

This isn’t about motivation. It’s about moral victories. That was a great moral victory for the lions. That can create motivation. That doesn’t mean he’s going to create more wins. you still need the talent
