Rogers' gun was cocked, had a bullet in the chamber

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 5, 2010 12:09 PM ET
The loaded gun that Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers was arrested for carrying at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Thursday was cocked and had a bullet in the chamber, according to a police report.

Donna J. Miller of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports those details from the police report, as well as the fact that the semi-automatic handgun was on safe mode and had seven bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber.

Rogers told authorities he put the gun, a black .45 caliber Kimbra Ultra II, inside his bag during a visit to Detroit and forgot he had it there until it was seen by airport security when he put it through an X-ray machine. The police report said Rogers has a valid concealed pistol license in Michigan. He played for the Lions from 2001 to 2007.

Rogers was planning to fly to Houston with fellow Browns defensive lineman Robaire Smith.

That is pretty major, this is not local law enforcement issue this is a federal offense.

If you search "Shaun Rogers" on youtube his apology comes up (it wouldn't let me embed it). Not once did he say "I knew better than to do that." He just says "I've had a firearm license for several years and this is not in my character."

I believe he honestly thought he could sneak it in.

If he has a handgun permit, then he knows that he "can't honestly sneek" a gun through airport security.

In every picture he just reminds me of a big kid.

It actually says you can carry firearms on a plane, but they must be declared to the airlines, unloaded, and locked in a hard container.

This is the same way Rogers will be traveling in the very near future.

I went fishing with my uncle and I keep all of my gear in a backpack. One of those items is a scaling knife. I decided last min to not check the bag, becasue they wanted to charge me a fee. So, I take the bag on, not thinking. They spotted the knive. They ran a background check and the whole 9 yards. They let me go, but they kept my scaling knife. They were actually really cool about it. Asked me several questions. I've never been arrested. Never been in trouble. To this day, I double check every bag. Even the ones I check. Just for one moment, I let my guard down. I still kick myself over that one.

I guess I made an incredibly STUPID mistake also. I'm just not big on judging people. We all fall short. Ive been practicing law for the past 30 yrs, so you would think I know better. Well I do, I just made a mistake.

Whatever floats your boat. Somehow, I find myself still leaning towards stupid with regards to Rogers.

If you think I'm trying to change your opinion of a guy that I don't even know, you horribly over estimate my point. I'm only saying, I made a similar mistake.

You forgot a knife in a bag, sheathed I expect. Not recommended by any stretch but I think we can all see how this can happen. Knives don't go off and knives don't accidentally kill people. Guns on the other hand, well, you see my point I'm sure. Anybody who ever owned a gun should know basic safety rules with respects to the weapon. There is a reason you have to get certified to carry a gun, where as, a scaling knife can be purchased at any sporting goods store with zero backround check, what so ever.

Had you forgotten a gun in your rucksack, I doubt that the authorities would have been so forgiving. If you can't keep track of your own guns, you should not have them.

I agree almost 100% with what you said. There is some school of thought, that beleives that a "cocked & locked" 1911 is the safest handgun in the world. I know a little about Kimber, and it is one of the finest 1911's made. So from a saftey stand point, that gun was not going off, no matter how many times it was kicked around or dropped or run over by a car etc... The kimber has a grib saftey also, which has to be pressed in order for the firing pin to be engaged. I know, more than you ever cared to know.

From a practial standpoint, I'm of the school that you never but one in the chamber unless you are ready to put your finger on the trigger. I also agree, that if you can't keep up with your gun, you should not have one. His kids could have gotten the bag, taken the saftey off and pow. So, we are mostly on agreement.

I own a .45 Cal 1911 Colt (20 years) and a Kimber Pro CDP .45. While I would agree that they are probably among the safest hand guns in the world, that still is no excuse for what Rogers did. They are not full proof and they are not beyond accidental discharge. I know where all my guns are 24x7. There is a reason for this. As you clearly point out, anything could have become of this gun. It's just beyond stupid not to know or even forget a loaded weapon in a bag for whatever reason. If accidental, then he is too stupid and irresponsible to have the privilege of owning a gun. If it was not an accident, then the same rules apply.

This is the kind of Gun owner who give all Gun owners a bad name. No excuse for this IMO.

I'm sure this was by accident I'm pretty sure he was not intending on hijacking the plane. It was stupid on his part and could be costly to him
