Rogers, Springs are together again

It's a scene their fans and coaches have been waiting all season to see: Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers running on to the field together as the Washington Commanders' starting cornerbacks.
Sunday, for the first time since the Commanders' playoff loss in Seattle in January, Springs and Rogers will do just that as Washington plays host to the Dallas Cowboys.
"I'm anxious to see what those guys can do," first-year cornerbacks coach Jerry Gray said. "You really can't tell what your secondary looks like until they play together and this is going to be the first test."
Springs was sidelined for almost two months following an Aug. 15 abdominal surgery and a subsequent severely strained right groin. He returned as the nickel corner on Oct. 15 against Tennessee. Rogers, meanwhile, broke his right thumb in that game and missed the following week's loss at Indianapolis.
Sunday's game against the Cowboys will mark just the sixth time Springs, a 10-year veteran, and Rogers, taken ninth overall in last year's draft, have started together since Rogers broke into the lineup for the third game of 2005. Springs was out two weeks later with a leg injury. A week later, a sprained ankle sidelined Rogers, who also missed the final three games of the regular season with a biceps injury. Springs missed the playoff opener at Tampa Bay with a bad groin.
Springs and Rogers will face a stiff test in their reunion. Cowboys standouts Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, two former Pro Bowl receivers, have combined for 70 receptions and 912 yards through seven games.
"I always like playing the best," Springs said. "Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens will let you know where you stand. Hopefully [having the starting corners] makes a difference. Carlos and I had a great spring playing with each other. I'm competitive. Carlos is competitive. I don't want too many passes on my side. He doesn't want too many on his side."
Gray was pleased with Springs' play against the Colts, though the corner said he was "still getting my legs underneath" himself. And, Springs is closer to game shape after going full-bore the past three practices.
Whether Springs is back in top form or not, Rogers is excited to have him back to share the load. Like journeyman Kenny Wright and backup Mike Rumph, Rogers ended up one spot higher in the rotation of where he should have been.
"Coach [Joe] Gibbs told me last week that the whole team will be energized to have 'you two' back in the starting lineup," Rogers said.
But as is evident by the Commanders' shockingly poor pass defense, which ranks third-last in the NFL, Rogers didn't step up in Springs' absence.
"Carlos is still like a rookie because he didn't start last year [just seven of 18 games]," Gray said. "He's starting on a team with high expectations so he has to play to the level of the other guys. If you don't, that means you're not having a good year. We're not going to carry you along. That's what he's caught up in right now."

The 25-year-old Rogers admits he's far from a finished product.
"It's been an up and down season for me," said Rogers, who broke the same thumb as when he was a junior at Auburn. "I need to capitalize when I have my hands on the ball. I should have about four picks. It wasn't much different when Shawn was out. Sometimes they want to go at Shawn to see if he's still got it. I was running and conditioning when I was off. I'll be ready. I've just got to take a little medicine, not think about the thumb, play through it and hopefully not do it again."
The splint on his thumb will make interceptions very difficult, but Rogers hasn't had that knack as it is. His dropped interception in the playoff loss at Seattle prevented the Commanders from taking a 10-0 lead.
"Carlos has matured in many, many ways," assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams said. "He's a lot more comfortable. The fact that he's able to take ownership and say, 'There are plays I know I should have made with my ability,' that's good to hear. We want him to think that way.
"He can make a difference. He's one of the few guys that we have that can make a difference."

Springs is on the downside of his career and has never truly lived up to his billing for such a high draft pick by Seattle in 1997. Carlos Rogers was a coveted pick who has yet to be a player. I yawn in their direction as will Romo as he zings perfect sirals into the waiting hands of Owens and Glenn.

Shawn Springs still has T.O.'s signature from that Monday night game when he was still with Seattle and Owens was with San Francisco! Something about the Sharpie being born?? LMAO

As a Commander fan, you can come close to having a heart attack, after watching Mike Rumph and Kenny Wright trot onto the field, to be counted on to stop a third and long play - I’d even be concerned, if the opposition had 70 yards to go for a first down.

I don't think I’ve ever seen a secondary that has played as bad, as I’ve seen these guys play in the first half of the season - hell, even Len Pasquarelli could manage to catch 2 to 3 50 yard bombs (or hoagies) on this secondary.

I can't sit here and say, that I’ve seen Mike Rumph or Kenny Wright do absolutely anything all season, besides give up explosive plays or get called for stupid penalties.

Maybe I’m exaggerating just a tiny bit, but we've had the luxury of having some very good corners, here in DC, over the last decade or so. (Champ, Smoot, Green).

I think Springs is the best corner on our team (I don't know how much that says, considering who we have on our roster) But when he‘s healthy - ...and I truely think that, he's a little under rated, as a Commander, he can be a very effective corner.

The last two years, when he was healthy, he shut down his side of the field and allowed the Commanders to throw the kitchen sink at the QB. He's also a very physical corner - he's very effective as a blitzer (that's how he got injured in the preaseason) and he is good against the run.

My only knock on him would be his age and durability.

Springs is an upgrade over Kenny (I lost the ball in the lights) Wright or Mike (when the going gets tough, just tackle the receiver rather than cover him) Rumph.

He just needed time to get back into football shape, with all of the time he’s missed.

Whether or not they can handle Glenn or T.O., only time will tell - Terry Glenn has me worried more than T.O. does, the Skins usually play T.O. pretty tough.

I’m sure there’s going to be some Commanders and Cowboys players making the Jacked Up highlight reel this week.

That show has been pretty much dominated by Roy Williams and Sean Taylor, the last two years.

One of the main factors IMO of the skins demise on defense this year has been Shawn Springs missing and the other problems they have had in the secondary.

It is not the ONLY one but I do indeed think it was a major factor.

Shawn Springs is a better CB than many cowboys fans are willing to admit.

Problem with him has always been his injuries. I don't know if he is 100% now or not but he has to make that D better if he finally is healthy.

May be a little too late but who knows.

I just know when that team has to start Wright or Rumph at a CB spot they are going to be worse off than a healthy springs.

We should have a right to be happy. We have had to look at Rumph/Wright as one of our starting corners all year now.

Rogers and Springs did a very job together last year as the starters. Hopefully for the skins, they will be able to continue from that, and help turn are defense around

Those two shouldn't be a problem; Romo threw for over 250 yards last week against two much better corners in Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble. I don't expect to see Sean Taylor (overrated) or Adam Archuleta/Troy Vincent (WAAAY past their primes) have much of an impact either. TO goes for 100+ for the second straight week...BOOK IT!

might as well put T.O. down for 4 td's as well

Springs has got to be less then 100%. stamina, rust, etc. Rogers has got that bummed up thumb and has not exactly impressed anyway. TO and Glenn should be able to burn them. Taylor has stunk it up in coverage this year and Arch has as well. There is no reason we should not be able to scorch them.

I agree with you. I hold shawn springs in high regard. He is an above average player.

There is something happening to the washington defense that I never hear anyone talk about. Experience and time. Teams have two full seasons of film to breakdown and after awhile other teams find tendencies. I believe this has something to do with their demise along with injury and the bad fit of archuletta. The middle of the field has been wide open this year for whatever reason and it leads to other problems.

If I were the Commander fans, I would be much more concerned about Witten/Fasano than Glenn and Owens. The TE's are the one's getting the most benefit out of the Bledsoe for Romo switch, and TE's have given the Commanders defense fits ever since the first preseason game this year.

If Witten and Fasano get out in their routes... Romo is going to find them and that's going to mean converted 3rd downs, sustained drives and a fresh defense for Dallas.

Stopping the Dallas TE's will be crucial for the Commanders defense, IMO.
