Rolando McClain's Future

I'd bring him back. Letting Jaylon learn under McClain and Lee is an excellent way to pass the torch to the future. If Rolondo McClain didn't have his issues, he would have never been in Dallas in the first place. He'd still be in Oakland. You have to deal with issues when you're able to take talented players for relatively cheap off of other rosters.

They have to keep him this year, but as soon as they can find s decent replacement, he needs to go. I can easily see him bring the type of player that drags the entire team down with his lack of effort and careless attitude.

I haven't seen anyone on the team say he has a lackadaisical attitude. In fact, it was McClain that inspired that 2014 defense, and the other players played harder when he was in.

When do NFL players air dirty laundry anymore. You almost never see or hear that. We didn't hear what a troublesome arse that Hardy was until after the season...and even now players won't talk about it.

The absence of that kind of evidence is meaningless. As per "playing harder because of McClain..." -- that's pure fiction, bro.

What's Jaylon going to learn from McClain?
How to smoke lots of j's
How to burn his house down and cash in on it?
How to milk the NFL for contracts and then walk away on his team and teammates?

What an awesome mentor for the Cowboys young players.

No. No. No. Move on.

It appears that McClain has some personal demons to deal with. I think he's a valuable member of the defense when he feels part of something bigger. The offseason prior to minicamps etc you can lose that if you don't make a concerted effort to do otherwise. Given the questions surrounding talent or fragility on the defensive side of the ball, I'm all for trying to help the guy find his happy place and become a contributing lifer.

Yeah, because that's all human beings have to offer...negatives.

McClain isn't a saint, but he's a good football player. Smith will do some good to take some pointers from him on how to play in the NFL.

It doesn't matter if he's needed or not needed. Paid or not paid. He's a living no-show. Let it go, already.

Let it go already? That is literally the first time that I have ever mentioned his name here.....................

Many people from the get go didn't want us to even re-sign this guy, but I feel like when he plays well he is a pro bowl caliber linebacker.

So I wonder how people would feel if he puts together a career year this year AND Jaylon Smith returns healthy? What would you suggest?

Personally I could never trust him to consistently be in shape and not get suspended for drugs. Von Miller is one strike away from a year suspension (I think), but at least there are no questions on his commitment and effort. I could even get behind Randy Gregory if he at least shows something on the field, but McClain has too many things working against him. Even if he did in 2016, I would assume it was for a contract.

I think it would be interesting to see what kind of defense we could have if we move Lee to the strong side position and have a linebacker corps of Smith - McClain - Lee. I think it would be absolutely stunning.

Just not a good allocation of resources if you ask me. Just not enough snaps for a SLB in today's NFL.

I think more likely the McClain days are over and Smith will be slotted as a middle linebacker, but I don't even know if that is the best position for him to be honest. I think it is also possible that Lee moves back to middle and Jaylon takes over at the will and McClain is still out, but I would like to see this kid put things together here.

Definitely possible that Lee moves back to middle...I wouldn't, but can see the argument.

Since the 2014 season, what has he done? Dallas waits every year until there are no other options to resign him. His attitude is the reason. It is no secret that he is not a hard worker and that is not the type of player that has positive effects on his teammates. He is the comple opposite of Lee.

He's only been here one year since 2014. Who on the team has complained about McClain? Hardy yes, but I haven't heard any teammates complain about McClain. In fact, when Lee was out, he was the leader of the defense. For what we are paying him, who can we bring in that will bring anywhere near similar benefit?

He played hide and seek last year. I hate players that has the ability , but they don't use it.

As long as he's good with one year deals, we should keep him around as long as possible. When he's out there, there's no denying that he has an impact.

He isn't a Pro Bowl caliber player because of what he's asked to do. In most 4-3's, the MIKE is protected by the D-Line and has to cover and get out to the perimeter on screen passes and to get the RB on outside zone runs. In our 4-3, Ro. is there to keep blockers off Sean Lee and let Lee do that. So Ro. is asked to do a limited amount of work. Personally, what I like about Smith is he can help protect Lee and cover and get outside to the perimeter. And eventually he could move to the WILL.

I was excited about Ro. after 2014 because he was still a guy that would take on blocks, but showed some ability to cover (using his size) and get out to the perimeter. But last year he was pathetic.

Switching out Hayden for Thornton should make a big difference on protecting Ro.
