http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...-convention-claims-nfl-is-harassing-sponsors/
Tom Brady isn’t the only high-profile NFL quarterback mired in a fight with the league.
The lawsuit involved Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s scuttled 2015 fantasy football convention is proceeding. According to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, the National Fantasy Football Convention filed paperwork in court on Wednesday claiming that the NFL is harassing event sponsors.
Specifically, lawyers claim that the NFL has issued subpoenas to 13 sponsors for the rescheduled 2016 convention in Pasadena, seeking information about each company’s role in the 2015 convention that was scrapped after the NFL allegedly squeezed players and league employees into bowing out because the convention was scheduled to occur at a facility in Las Vegas owned by a casino.
In a motion seeking a court order blocking access to the sponsors’ materials, the lawyers claimed that, after the list of sponsors was identified earlier this month, the “NFL immediately began harassing . . . clients and sponsors.”
“The NFL believes that it does not have to follow anyone’s rules, including those of the Texas Legislature,” the lawyers contend. “To harass Plaintiff’s sponsors, the NFL bypassed the legislature’s 10-day notice requirement and sent the subpoenas to the . . . sponsors without providing anyone a 10-day notice – a flagrant violation of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure.”
Although it seems the NFL engaged in heavy-handed and hypocritical practices by shutting down the convention, seeking discovery via the issuance of subpoenas to non-parties hardly amounts to harassment. While the relevance of the requested materials isn’t immediately clear, the league could be trying to evaluate the claim for damages resulted from the canceled convention by obtaining straight from the sponsors any commitments that went unfulfilled after the event didn’t occur.
Either way, two of the highest-profile players in the NFL currently have significant legal disputes with the NFL. Which if nothing else will continue to make the ultimate reality show even more entertaining.
