Couple of thoughts on the QB position in Dallas:

Do's
  • Assuming Romo's back is ok I want Romo back and I think he will be fine running the show for another 2 years
  • Drop Orton and his high salary
  • This is the year to draft a QB -- there are a ton of QBs projected for the 1st round. Take one in the 1st round ala like the Packers did in 2005 with Favre still have 2-3 years left. Let him learn.
Don'ts
  • Don't go into next season with Romo #1 and Orton #2.
  • Don't wait until rounds 3+ to draft a QB

If our defense was better I would agree with that. But I can't see us as having the luxury to invest that in a QB without having a very solid plan to address this defense.

this draft is deep at QB and we absolutely need help on the DL. draft DL in the 1st and maybe even the 2nd, and then start focusing on the other positions. imo

How they build the team prior to the draft is paramount to whom they select in the first few rounds...I know that BPA is always the shtick, but IMO, a QB is not BPA currently with all of the immense needs on the DL (for example)

I would like to know more about Jimmy Garoppolo. I have only seen some highlights and reading up on him, but I really like what I have heard so far. He sounds like a good prospect to groom for a few seasons.

Why would you cut Orton? He is in the last year of his 3 year contact. With the restructure that Dallas used with him this season he would still count against the cap. Might as well keep him around this season whether they draft another QB or not.

I would look at Keith Price in the 7th round- UDFA slot. I don't see us drafting a QB when we have glaring needs on the Dline.

BPA. Period. If that's a QB, go ahead and take him. If it's pretty much anything else, take him. (If it's a TE, trade down).

Ugh....if we draft a QB in the first, I'll throw a shoe at my TV.

I'm sure oodles of Packers fans were disgusted that the Packers took a QB in 2005 when Favre still had time left.

Sometimes you have to look more than 1 year out.

Favre was turning 36 that year, and they still expected him to play 2-3 years. Romo is turning 34. Whoever we draft will be out of their rookie contract by the time Romo is ready to call it quits or in sufficient decline to make a cut/trade worthwhile.

We have too many holes to be looking for a starter 3-4 years from now. Not to mention there's less than 30% chance the QB we draft will actually ever be any good. For whatever reason, QBs no longer take 3-4 years to develop. Plenty are coming in and playing at a high level in their first or second year. This is not the time to draft a QB.

A defense isnt going to help jack if we can't score points.
