Just a quick question for AdamJJT, or anyone else with cap knowledge.

What is Romo's cap number for 2009? And what would be the cap hit if traded this year. For the record I am not wanting Romo gone, I was just curious what the number would be since the Cutler thing is going on in Denver.

I am just wondering how guaranteed money works versus signing bonus, etc.

Thanks.

Trade's do not remove the Cap hit. He is not going to be traded and neither is Jay Cutler. That was a bogus rumor started by fans on a Broncos message board.

David,

At the start of free agency, we were $14,511,275 under the cap.

If we did trade for Jon Kitna and did not restructure his contract, his cap number would be $2.5 million. That would reduce our cap room by $2.115 million, leaving us $12,396,275 under the cap.

Here’s the breakdown of our salary cap –

TOP 51

Code:
Terrell Owens $8,995,000
Roy L. Williams (SS) $6,620,000
Greg Ellis $6,250,000
Ken Hamlin $5,805,000
Roy E. Williams (WR) $5,655,900
Anthony Henry $5,600,000
Jason Witten $4,700,000
Tony Romo $4,582,499
Bradie James $4,223,000
Leonard Davis $4,166,666
Andre Gurode $4,066,666
Terence Newman $3,901,028
Kyle Kosier $3,630,000
Flozell Adams $3,097,943
Patrick Crayton $2,700,000

I don't even think Romo is a top 5 QB in terms of salary...

OK? Once again, I am not worrying about Romo or Cutler being traded. I am just wanting some clarification on what Romo's cap acceleration would be if
(hypothetically) it were to happen. I know it is not going to happen. I just want a little knowledge concerning trades affecting the cap regarding guaranteed money. That is all.

I answered that part first then clarified that Romo is staying.

I know what you answered. I guess what I am needing is a number amount of what would hit the cap. I know if he were to be traded or cut (I know he won't be) there would be a cap hit regardless. I just was curious what it would be (due to guaranteed money) and how much accelerate into 2009. How much guaranteed money has he already been paid?

See below, already answered.

That is his 2009 cap hit. If we were to trade him that money goes bye bye. The money we pay to his replacement goes bye bye. Flush.

There is no chance he will be traded.

I am not sure how much guaranteed money he has been paid, but that is the amount he counts towards the cap and that is the relevant amount.

I guess that would be the question for Adam. I know he counts roughly $4.6 million against the cap in salary alone. Partly this is due to his restructuring last year to sign Marion B. I guess my only question left is: how is guaranteed money accelerated? I know that signing bonuses are prorated, is guaranteed money the same? And didn't he have something like $30 million guaranteed?

That's not the cap hit because you would have to factor in the prorated bonus that he reieved last year.

It's not Romo related, but by looking at that list with all the dead money + guys coming off the cap next year, we should be in pretty decent shape next year (assuming they'll will renegotiate a cap).

I think you are correct his cap hit would be higher if traded.

then u must factor in what we save in trading Henry for kitna, therefore we should have more space..

Just to answer the question, trading Romo would reduce the cap room we have by more than $13.3 million.

Romo's salary should be cut $500,000 for every INT and fumble!! He'd have saved Dallas $10.5million!! haha

Correct me if I am wrong Adam, but the $4.5 cap number for Romo for 2009 does not include the guaranteed money that would accelerate into this years cap if he was traded or released.

So if Romo was traded or released....we would add to the cap his salary that is saved for 2009 and then subtract the remaining prorated signing bonus and any guaranteed money that was left on his contract.

The net affect would be a cap hit of over $13 million.

Ok, but then he'd say: " I want 1.5 million for every TD pass I throw or rushing TD, I'd have ".

Let's see, that's 83 TDs ( 2 rushing ), which is 124 million dollars, minus 46 ints, which is 23 million dollars, minus 12 fumbles, which is another 6 millions

124 - 23 - 6 = 95 million dollars.

Now, this is his current contract:

Six-year, $67.4 million contract extension through 2013. The deal contains $30 million guaranteed, including an $11.5 million signing bonus and Romo's 2008 base salary. 2009: $620,000, 2010: $8.5 million, 2011-2012: $9 million, 2013: $11.5 million, 2014: Free Agent.

Cap charges:
$9.41 million (2009),
$10.91 million (2010),
$11.41 million (2011-2012),
$13.91 million (2013).

I think TR should remain with his current contract, thank you.

:laugh2:

You are correct. Romo's base salary this season is only $620,000, and trading him would accelerate more than $13.93 million of bonus prorations currently charged against the cap from 2010 to 2013. The net cap hit would be more than $13.3 million MORE than his current cap number of $4,582,499.

Yikes. That makes it an even more foolish idea.
