2 weeks ago, vs the 49ers Romo played through injury, a punctured lung and fractured ribs. Proving toughness and a dedication to the game of football very few have shown before, the list starts and can arguably end with Brett Favre.

This week vs the Commanders, Romo played without his number one receiver, defiant through injury and an insane amount of mental mistakes by his offensive lane (namely Costa) on Monday Night Football. Once again proving his dedication to the game, and his now unquestionable leadership over this team.

What Romo did these past two weeks was solidify himself in the minds of the Casual Football fans, im not talking about us, im not talking about the other fanatics, we are the minority. Im talking about the other 12 million or so that tune into every game, the ones that don't live and breath football. Romo proved to them what we already knew, Tony Romo has solidified himself in the minds of the casual fan. Today my uncle called me, his a prototypical "casual" fan, he's a football fan. No allegiance to a team, he just enjoys football. He watches a few games a year. What he said to me was "I am excited to watch Romo play from now on, he proved something on Monday, that center just kept snapping at the wrong time. Romo kept his cool and led the team to a win". This uncle harassed me about Romo's play for years, and in these past two weeks has proven to him, and millions of other football fans what we already knew. Tony Romo is now a "made man" in the eyes of the football fan's in America, he is now in a group that very few are in currently, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. Romo is now one of them in the eyes of the common fans, and he has done it without something the other 4 have already accomplished. Now it's Romos turn to get it done.

No he's not.

Fans are fickle. Any goodwill Romo has earned can quickly be thrown away.

This is great perspective R2A. I disagree that Romo didn't need his accomplishments over the past two weeks to win the favor of the diehards. I think what he's done recently has won over everyone, and those who were already bought in just rebought for double.

As one of the diehards, I can tell I always had that very tiny flavor of doubt about Romo's leadership, not because of the media, but because of his comments from a few years ago after an agonizing loss when he said that if he never won a Championship he'd be albe to live with himself knowng he did his best (or something tothat effect). That just never sat well with me, and it took his showing the last two weeks to convince me, once and for all, that he's truly much more serious about the game now, and just not talking the goodspeak.

With what he did recently though, in the last game esepcially, I think he gained the trust of everyone - especially all players - in the organization. And I'm not talking about his playing with injuries, but rather how he ovecame Costa's mistakes, and was able to coach Ogletree on the field. That's true leadership - winning over his teammates, not the fans, and he did that by erasing all doubt to the contrary. Injuries aside, if Romo does not do that, no way do the Boys win that game.

I think that, more than anything else, erased any doubts aobut Romo's ability to be a leader and gain that trust with his teammmtes. In such a short time this has become so evident that all fans - diehards nad cuasulas - are buying in. And the media is hepling to spread it because they're now rightly doing an about face and admititng that what they've witnessed form Romo recently is truly jaw-dropping.

I'm not sure he put himself up in that top tier of QBs these last couple of weeks, but I'm guessing he at least graudated from "he sucks" to "he's pretty good" in the eyes of the casual fan.

Agreed. He will never be in the same mode as Manning, Brady, Rodgers until he has a LOT more success in the playoffs and beyond - right or wrong, but plain and simple.

Mere toughness doesn't get you a "Manning, Brady, Rodgers" pass.

but because of his comments from a few years ago after an agonizing loss when he said that if he never won a Championship he'd be albe to live with himself knowng he did his best (or something tothat effect).
It was a harmless, honest, and level-headed statement. I had no problem with it whatsoever, and I'll never understand why anyone did have a problem with it. The line was, "if something in sports is the worst thing that ever happens to you, then you've lived a pretty good life."

And if you examine the phrase literally, he is 100% correct.

Would you rather him lie and say that he'd rather get stabbed in the eye-ball than miss an open receiver?

The timing may not have been ideal... but that is only because there are so many fans who ended up taking offense to it.

Romo won't get credit for a few reasons.

#1 He is the QB of the dallas cowboys... that already lends himself to a great deal of hatred.

#2 He is given the haters some ammunition.

#3 He doesn't fit many contingents.
a. He didn't go to a big school, so people really don't know him from college years. This hurts him a lot with a lot of fans who concentrate on the nfl and ncaa.

b. He isn't a michael vick like guy.

c. He isnt a tom brady or peyton manning like guy.

Aaron Rodgers was in a similar boat to tony romo until he won the super bowl. Not sure how Philip Rivers has avoided the same, but he has a really different attitude I guess, coming from the AFC I think certainly helps him.

D. Going undrafted doesn't help him. No one really wants to give the guy credit because he went undrafted. All of his NFL leading stats mean nothing, because a lot of people still see him as this undrafted guy. A lot of guys get credit again, solely for their standing coming out of college.

E. A lot of people don't like that without a great deal of success, he came into a great deal of fame, and very quickly. Dating Carrie Underwood, Jessica Simpson, trying on for pga tours e.t.c.

It can be as soon as the first snap of the first play of the Detroit game. The trolls that secretly root against Romo or the Cowboys in general are hoping he screws up, they are lying in wait, nothing more, and nothing less. They are steamed that they cannot hate on him without looking like a complete fool. That is why they are going hard on players that their feeble minds perceive as not playing well.

It goes beyond being fickled, it is idiocy at its best.

Romo had already arrived after winning the East, taking Dallas to the playoffs and beating the Eagles in 2009. "Romo has arrived" was the buzz with the talking heads. That was totally forgotten in 2010 and the JJTs of the world reverted back to Romo "not winning the big one", Romo "choking in the clutch". Now, after two weeks, it is again back to "Romo has arrived".

Talking heads and Columnists can get away with being stupid because there really is no accountability for them. If that were not the case then JJT would be bagging your groceries instead of writing for ESPN. Here is the truth: Romo is a fantastic QB who will probably have a couple of head scratchers during the season. He has always been that QB even when some have claimed otherwise.

The only real difference in Romo this season is between the snaps where he has absolutely taken charge of this team. Good for him and for Dallas. If we can all remember that after the next time he has one of those questionable decisions (and he eventually will), then this entire CowboysZone will be better off for it. Trust me, the talking heads will instantly forget the accolades and begin piling on again.

Okay, sorry, rant off. :D

We had these exact same conversations a few years ago, after the crazy Bills victory, after we went 13-3, in 2009 when we won in December and won a playoff game. There was always a "Tony Romo has arrived" thread. The newfound goodwill toward Tony will last until our next loss, and no longer.

He has to win a Super Bowl, period. Anything other than will be, " Tony Romo was good, but....

I agree. If toughness were all that got you that kind of pass more people would think of Archie Manning as amazing cause that man took a freaking beating on a really bad team and still kept playing.

R2A I like the post. I like what you've got to say here and I agree with it to some extent but Romo will never be made, to the majority of fans (Be them rabid or casual) until he wins a ring.

That's just the way it goes for the majority of football players, especially at the QB spot.

But I think Romo has proven a lot of things about him to be completely wrong over the last couple of weeks and I think, just from my own personal observations, that some of the folks who hated on him in the media are starting to even come around to him now as well.

Cowboy fans are stupid. Romo has won over the ones that matter, his teammates, his NFL peers, and the media that loves to hate him now loves him. As for dumb Cowboy fans...:laugh1:

Your right, he isn't completely made yet, but he certainly is not the media target of QB they pick on for no reason, it seems Eli Manning is now inheriting that title, although he does have a ring which makes it strange. To the casual fans, the perception of the media is their reality. Romo in the past two weeks has probably won more people over than he had in his entire reign as the Cowboy's starter, a huge majority of the football fans are casual. For the 15million that watch each cowboys game, most likely 1-2million are "rabid" fans.
