he just takes time to get going, but once he does-- he roars!

He had 11 touchdowns to 9 interceptions and a QB rating of 83.6 in first halves last season.

He had 15 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and a QB rating of 100.4 in second halves last season.

Romo's rating was 114.7 in the fourth quarter with 9 touchdowns and 1 interception.

This is a trend I noticed for years now. Romo comes out cold and heats up. He is always more inaccurate and more dangerous early in the game.

I tried to suggest some solutions to this and people laughed at me.

They were:

Make him warm up more--really break a sweat.
Throw a deep, no risk (i.e its like a punt) pass early as possible.
Run more early
Throw quick slants and screens early to get him going
Put him on some rollouts or called draws.

This is a huge issue! We need to make the staff aware if they aren't. This could be the difference between SB or bust.

You'd think the coaching staff, who are getting paid a butt load of money, would recognize something like that.

Yugo's had diesel engines...

Tony Romo's last 4 games of 2008:
150 attempts, 84 completions (56%), 889yds, 5TDs, 6INTs, QB Rating: 67.8 (plus 3 fumbles lost)

Last 4 games of 2007:
110 attempts, 66 completions (60%), 758yds, 2TDs, 6INTs, QB Rating: 64.1 (0 fumbles lost!)

Last 4 games of 2006:
199 attempts, 76 completions (63.8%), 930yds, 6TDs, 4INTs, QB Rating: 90.6 (2 fumbles lost)

I see a trend too...

you would have thought Garrett would have called more slants to defeat the pass too

Tony Romo's excellent fourth quarter rating was directly opposed by his work in the first quarter.

3 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and a QB rating of 71.5 last season in the first quarter.

Running the ball three times in a row is not illegal. Three runs or two and an incomplete pass leading to a punt is a good thing.

We routinely asked Romo to win games from start to finsh and that wasn't the best way to manage our quarterback. He needs to be reeled in, especially at the start of games, and allowed to get in the flow before becoming Captain Pass Happy if the need arises.

Yeah thats what I remembered.

Exactly Bluefin... It's a coaching issue. Let him get warm, don't ask too much early on.

And, yes, the December trend is true, too. But even in Dec, Romo is better in the 4th. So, thanks for the off-topic reply EPLO

This is a graphic they used in the SNF game against the Giants. Updated, he's 5-8 in December. As for his QB rating in that month, I'm guessing it dipped.

Yeah, well playing like crap in the first half and then rebounding in the second half got a little old last season. I used to joke with my brother that they should cut his salary in half since he only plays well in the second half. He needs to learn that it's a 4 quarter game.

I think the December drop is him and the team just turning things off. They've done it every year for over a decade now.

For the sake of being thorough:

December stats: 5-8 record, 244/421, 2995yds, 14TDs, 19INTs (17fumbles, 5 lost), QB Rating: 72.3

Maybe that's a stat that speaks to the offense's ability to make adjustments within a game.

Wait, who said that? Somebody shut him up!

In the 2 1/2 years Romo has started, we were not very good running the ball. Defenses have mostly emphasized the pass more so than the run early on and that is what I believe has contributed to the slow starts.

Does it help to break the ice early, have a few drives and defensive looks to pick your spots better, absolutely. But when teams know you're a big play offense and you'r going to throw the ball to open up the run game they play the pass. I think we can all agree it's much tougher to pass early on when we haven't found any wholes in the coverages yet as opposed to later on in games.

Someone should have figured these slow starts out a long time ago.

It reminds me of Chan Gailey and road games. You just knew in the second half the other team would come back to win. Every time.

Lousy Decembers were the norm long before Romo took the helm. It is an organizational issue. Even the Great Tuna couldn't fix it. I can't put my finger on it either.

What's usually left out is the number of sacks that Romo gets the last 4 games of each season. How about the lack of protection Romo gets down the stretch.

Roger had a similiar problem. In the first he seemed to be always high with his passes but as the game progressed, his play improved. He was really tough in the 4th quarter.
