Romo is not a gunslinger.

I'm so tired of hearing this analogy. The guy protects the ball as well as anyone in the league and executes plays as they are meant to be executed and people call him a gunslinger? Can anyone justify this?

This year he hasn't been much of one, but history shows he is, and several big plays (Atlanta touchdown pass, Commanders winning TD pass in the first game) have been thanks to his gunslinger mentality.

Aikman even talked about having a talk with Tony where he said normal quarterbacks have an instinct to protect the ball, it comes naturally, and Tony needs to consciously think about it before every play to avoid his gunslinging.

It's more about his attitude now than his actual play.

Make no mistake, he's still a gunslinger at heart.

Normal quarterbacks don't have the ability to make two or three pass rushers miss in one play though either.

When I think of evading the pass rush, I think elusive not gunslinger.

The ability to evade the pass rush leads a quarterback, naturally, to a mentality of believing they can make a play in nearly every situation.

Has someone even defined the term "gunslinger"?

That's another thing that concerns me. It has connotations of a loose cannon, sort of. Someone please define this for me.

a qb that slings the football across the field with wreckless abandon. makes big plays you thought not possible and many head scratchers as well. pretty much favre to a tee.

i always thought the gun in "gunslinger" meant to be the guys throwing arm(gun).

Tony Romo is a corvette. He can drive the speed limit and look good but when he needs to open it up he has the guts and the gears to do it.

he's been a gunslinger in 3 of the 4 years he's played. for all we know this could be an aberration like tom brady in 2007. i don't even think being a gunslinger is a bad thing.

gunslinger is a guy who takes stupid risks , ala favre for most of favre's career

like take this year for example, and look at favre's stats

this year favre was not a gunslinger, he played pretty damn smart save for a few games

the only time smart qbs act like gunslingers is when they force passes , it happens to the best of em, but a gunslinger is a guy who forces passes consistently (cutler for one)

i know what the term means. i wouldn't call them stupid risks either. a gunslinger makes plays. cutler is a ****ty qb, not a gunslinger.

Agreed.

Remember how, for the first three seasons, before every play you'd wonder if Romo was going to throw a pick? The pass would be in the air to an off camera receiver and you would be wondering what color jersey you'd see when it got there ? That's gunslinger Romo. And outside of the first game against the giants I haven't seen much of him.

Remember Romo, running around with the ball in one hand, not even thinking about tucking it, with his arm cocked and ready to throw, pump faking all the while? Remember Romo chucking up prayers while being tackled? (prayers that were sometimes answered and sometimes... Not so much). That's gunslinger Romo. Again, I haven't seen much of him this year.

Remember the Romo 4 yard run?
That's gunslinger Romo. Any QB in his right mind would never have run that back, outside of perhaps a mike vick or Vince young type. Most QBs would fall on the ball or throw it out of bounds. Romo? Romo wants to make a play, and furthermore he THINKS (or thought at least) that he can make a play under any circumstances, no matter how bad the odds. That's gunslinger Romo. That's the guy with a brilliant play one second and a head scratching pick or fumble the next. I haven't seen much of him this season.

I think he's realized that he can't perform miracles. At least... Not on every play.
