Counting only the time that he has played, Romo is averaging 282 passing yards per game. This would shatter Danny White's team record of 249, and puts Romo right on pace for a 3,000 yard season.

The amazing thing about all the yards Romo is piling up--other than the fact that he is doing it in the first 10 games he has ever played--is the amount of yardage that is coming from each pass itself, the ball in the air, as opposed to yards after catch.

After 14 games, only 34% of Romo's passing yards are yards after the catch. This ties Peyton Manning for the league lead.

The first number is passing yards per game, followed by percentage of those yards that are after the catch, and finally air yards only.

Romo.......282 34% 186
PManning..279 34% 184
Brees.........303 45% 167
Palmer......261 38% 163
Bulger.......262 44% 146
Roethbrgr..238 40% 142
EManning...219 38% 137
Pennington 211 38% 130
McNabb.....265 53% 125
Rivers.......213 42% 124
Brady........218 45% 120
Delhomme 217 48% 114
Favre........237 52% 114
McNair.......184 43% 105
Losman......182 43% 104
Carr............180 53% 85
Smith..........179 53% 85

A disclaimer of sorts:
The following 4 QB's aren't listed in the link, because they don't have enough YAC to qualify. This means they should be somewhere on my list, but they couldn't possibly lead it. Grossman's YAC, for example, would have to be 11%, and Vick and Garrard don't even have as many total yards as Romo's non-YAC yards.

Vick 163
Hasselbeck 204
Grossman 212
Garrard 175

Thats a cool stat...interesting that in the passer rating reform thread there was some call (by me in particular) to take yards in the air more into effect in passer rating.

Apparently there is a correlation as the people on the top of this list are pretty much at the top of the QB rating list.

I think I may have mentioned it first in another thread. ;)

Some say that YAC indicates passing skill as much as it is an indication of a receiver's open field running skills. I think Romo's accuracy, and PManning's position on this list are pretty strong arguments against that.

actually on this board was a thread showing Romo's pre-draft write up and it said something to the effect that Romo had an uncanny ability to hit runners in stride, which would blister your point

Very cool info thanks. I always believed Marvin Harrison benefitted tremendously from Peyton's deep accuracy.

So, what you're saying is that Romo throws so poorly that receivers don't have a chance to run after they catch the ball if they are lucky enough to snag his bad passes? :D :D :D

Just figured I'd beat some of the anti's to the punch ..

Not to take away from Peyton as that is true but I think it's more Harrisons ability to get open and run under balls than it is Peyton's long ball accuracy. I'm not saying 90% Harrison but at least 50-50. It takes two and those two are at the top of the NFLs all time list.

SJackson 8.1
Bush 7.9
KJones 9.9
Westbrook 8.0
Tomlinson 9.3

Those are the top 5 total YAC receivers in the league (along with YAC per catch). Notice they are all RB's, and not WR's on teams with accurate passers.

Romo's #1 target (Owens) averages 4.5 YAC per reception, which is about half of what the elite YAC guys average.

Now take half of the 137 passes targeted for Owens, and throw them to backs, and watch our total yards go up. MB3 averages 8 YAC per catch, and JJ averages 16.8!

Considering how much harder it is to throw 30-40 yds in the air accurately vs 10-15 having yds after catch subtracted from their rating would be a good thing.

Either he's not hitting them in stride,
Romo is the 2nd most accurate passer in the league. Unless you want to argue that the other QB's who have lower completion percentages either hit the receiver in stride or miss him completely, with no passes in between.

the receivers are lousy after the catch,

or he's completing a ******** of sideline routes.
Any QB on a team that doesn't use its backs as receivers will make more throws to the sidelines. If Romo didn't have the ability to throw over the middle, sideline routes would never be open.

More of Romo's passes result in 1st downs than any other QB in the NFL, and he's doing it with less help after the catch than any QB in the NFL.

What a great stat...he's like a QB from a past era, ya know like in the old AFL days, who throws the ball downfield all the time.

The only difference is, most of those guys has completion percentages at around 50%
