Romo or Cutler

Yeah, we would all love to have Cutler over any of our QBs for a career, but I'm asking who out of Romo and Cutler looked better just in their preseason game only?

Cutler 16/22 192 yds 1 TD 0 INT

I think Cutler did since you threw more down the field throws and not dinks and dunks under 10 yds.

Different teammates, different defensive personnel, different coverages, different protection...No comparison.

Both guys had good outings it looks like from the numbers.

As for Romo's "dinks and dunks"...they gained positive yardage instead of taking a sack. I don't see why so many people are *****ing about that. I was thrilled to see a QB getting rid of the ball and making something positive out of a potentially negative play.

First let me start off by saying tha I did not see either Romo or Cutler play.

Based on YPC romo was slightly higher 12.37 vs. 12.00. If your statement is true that would mean that Romo had more YAC than Cutler? Is that correct? If so, doesn't it also depend on if the downfield wr' are not open forcing the dump off or the OL not giving Romo enough time to allow the receivers to get down field? IIRC, I read that Romo was able to quickly get through his progressions quickly meaning the dump offs could have been the result of good coverage and in some cases due to the pressure he was under to get rid of the ball quicker thus not allowing the play to develop.

Like I mentioned, I didn't see either play so I can't judge who performed better I just wanted to point out that there are variables that affect the stats that must be considered and that the only way to tell who performed better is based on if the QB made the right reads/decision. Just my 2 cents.

Your right DallasinDC. Romo did evade the rush and probably made the right read from WRs being covered down field. I hope so but only the coaches know if he makes the right reads or hurries his progression to the dump too fast. The more yardage I believe is from yards after catch.

Cutler made two down the field throws that were impressive to me. One was down the sideline over the Cb and before the safety got there. The other was a seam or skinny post to I think the tightend. I bring this up because I want to see this from Romo. Even last year he plays very well but with short throws. I don't see the read the coverage and hit the medium range hard throws that only true NFL starters can make. Once you demonstrated that, the defense respects you and you can then manage the game and take what the defense gives you. If you just dump off constantly, NFL defenses will eat you up until you prove otherwise, which is reminicent of QC. He could not make these throws and the defenses knew and ate his lunch like the Panthers in the playoffs. QC is not in the league is no accident or just because he couldn't lay off the weed. Romo needs to show more like Cutler is already showing.

And as for you can't compare since they play in different games, different defenses...that is absolutely hilarious to make that statement. If you can't compare because each player faces such extremely different circumstances then why have a discussion board at all. If your right then all these discussions comparing Aikman and Brady, McNabb and Vick, etc etc is a waste of time...well it is but we do it anyway constantly. I mean they do play the same game called football, pro, NFL league, QB, odd shaped ball, 10 yards for a first down...

cutler. he has a higher upside. he could be a probowl QB where it would take romo a lot longer. Romo is the line of Jake Delhomme or Drew Brees. the type of QB who is smart will win games but needs help and can't carry a team.

Cutler may be a Roethlisberger type of QB that's able to be effective playing right away because Denver has a great running game and a solid defense. Plus Shanahan knows how to limit QB passing attempts per game since he was basically limiting Plummer to about 25 throws last season.

The one thing Roethlisberger had for him was his mobility and ability to throw on the run. Roethlisberger was purely a one read QB his rookie year, but when the first read wasn't there, he could scramble for yardage or scramble out of the pocket and that would open up a receiver for him to throw to.

I don't think Cutler will be able to make more reads than Roethlisberger did his rookie year at this point in time and I don't think he has Roethlisberger's mobility to help him out.

Still, it was a nice performance by both guys, but my guess is that Romo is far ahead of Cutler at this point (and he should be).

Also, remember Romo not only had more ypc and more ypa, but had 3 drops as well.

Agreed.

Cutler looks like he is quick... his release, his decisions, reads... etc.... = Instinctive

Romo = a thinking QB... really has to think about his instruction(ie. BP said he has to be coached for whole game) etc....

Agree with you in general but did you miss the two throws to Crayton the skinny post for the TD where he was covered very well and the sideline throw where the ball was up where only Crayton could get it--and then went 33 yds after his man fell away?

I'm as much an advocate as you, for "you can't teach arm strength" but give ROMO his due here.
