I would truly love for one of my esteemed fellow fans to convince me why we should not be going high on a QB as an area of need along with DL in the draft. Romo is coming off of major surgery, getting acquainted with father time, and just not the same person that captured our hearts during his prime. I consider this a small pulse check. Bortles would be a great snag early in the 2nd.

Personally I think Orton plays a big part in how this will play out. If Orton walks I would say it becomes a need in a mid round, you're right, Romo should not be considered the starter until he is healthy, and it will take some time until they can definitively say he's ready to go.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I see no way Bortles drops to the 2nd round. QB's trend upward on draft day, not the other way around. Then again, I've been out of the football loop since the end of the season and have no idea whether Bortles had a good/bad combine.

if we keep shoring up our o-line we could get a pure pocket passing qb with a strong arm in the later rounds.

I always wanted and loved Aaron Murray, why not take him later in the draft (3rd, 4th)? I think he'll be a great Pro. Reminds me a lot of Brees, and a little bit of Romo with some of his throws. And I'm not kidding his other comparison I see is Andrew Luck, I actually see a little of Luck in his arm; very strong, confident arm this kid has.
Reminds me of when everybody wanted Vick back in '01, and there was Brees in the 2nd round, and look at Brees today. I think Murray may ultimately be the best QB in the class, I would take him as early as 2nd round, however there's no need to take a QB that high, but 3rd-4th I think this kid is a steal.

I wouldn't say high need, but if we don't start seriously looking for Romo's eventual successor we'll be in trouble. I'd prefer not to go through the Ryan Leaf/Clint Stoerner/Drew Henson parade again.

Bortles wont be there in the 2nd. He wont be there at 16. But I agree we should take one in rounds 2 or 3. If not this year next year

Different times with the cap issues but remember the Landry years. Dom M Craig Morton Jerry Rone all at the same time then Rodger and Danny White. Just don't think the cap gives you. The chance to stockpile at QB. 49ers with Joe & Steve those days are gone.

Ask yourself this, and be honest.

What's a position right now that we could upgrade through the draft easier? Our QB position? Our D-Line position? Our Safety position? Our CB position? Or our LB position?

To me, I think the answer is obvious, there are much more pressing needs on this team then to upgrade a top notch 2nd tiered QB. You can win a Super Bowl with a top notch 2nd tier QB, but you can't win a Super Bowl with a bottom of the barrel defense, ya dig?

I'm not against drafting a QB sometime after rd 2 or 3, but you are totally smokin crack if you think Bortles would be there in RD 2. The guy may be the 1st player chosen, and almost certainly top 5 or so.

Thoughts on the potential to grab Logan Thomas in the later rounds and coach him into a player at the next level?

It's called wasting a high pick on a player who probably won't ever play a regular season game for the franchise. If you pick Bortles and Romo plays for three more years, Bortles will have no experience to bank on, and will walk to another team for his second contract. If Romo falls apart physically, the team will nose dive since he's been carrying them anyways. Then they'll have a top 5 pick and can take a quality QB prospect.
