BTW: I'not a golfer, so can anyone tell me what it means that Romo carries a 1 handicap? I've also heard the phrase "he's a scratch golfer" so what does that mean? Thanks.

The field for the Azalea Invitational golf tournament at the Country Club of Charleston has been blessed through the years with many of the country's top amateur golfers. The entry list for the 2008 tournament is no different with a sprinkling of U.S. Mid-Amateur champions, Walker Cup golfers, top collegians and highly rated juniors.

But one of this year's entrants, although a top golfer, is better known for another sport. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who carries a 1 handicap, has accepted an invitation to play in the event, scheduled for March 27-30.

A scratch handicap would be a zero handicap, so Romo is not scratch... but under USGA rules, all you need is a 2 handicap to apply to qualify for the US Open...

A 1 handicap player is very, very good, but not quite Tour potential... those guys are all like plus 2 or 3 handicaps, if pros could have handicaps...

Thanks. Think I heard that phrase applied to Romo early in 07 season. So maybe he was a scratch golfer a year ago but, as the starting QB maybe more recently is play has deteriorated down to a 1 handicap.

Handicapping is a means by which golfers of different abilities can play against each other and still have it be somewhat fair and fun.

I'm a recreational golfer and I have about a 17 handicap. Generally speaking, that means if I played against Romo, he'd have to beat me by about a full stroke per hole to win. Usually how that is figured is that I would "get" a stroke advantage on the 16 toughest holes.

If two golfers who were closer together were playing (say a 5 handicap going up against a 10 handicap) the 10 handicapper would get a 5 stroke advantage, which would be spread out over the 5 toughest holes on the course.

A 1 handicap means that you shoot about par every time you play. So if par is 72, you're likely to shoot in the 70-75 range (depending on the "slope" of the course which determines how difficult the course actually is). It's not an exact math, but if you're a 10 handicap, then you would probably should shoot around 82 to 88 for 18 holes. You very top notch amateurs are probably a +2 handicap (Romo is a -1 handicap) and your tour pros don't even have a handicap, but if they did it would probably be in the +4 range. Romo is probably more talented than a 1 handicap because he probably doesn't play much during the season and can't fully concentrate on his golf game.

Out of all of the athletes that play golf, he's got to be the best at it by now. There's a lot of athletes that claim they are scratch golfers, but they usually just play their home course and for fun. Romo almost qualifies for pro tournaments and in particular the US Open which is extremely hard to qualify for.
