Passes Thrown 1-20 yards
Romo.....29 of 40....362 yds....3TD....2int...20 1stD.....104.4 rating
Bledsoe..71 of 130..775 yds....4TD....6int...40 1stD.......63.5 rating

This means passes that travelled 1-20 yards in the air. YAC is not a factor. 50% of every pass Romo throws 1-20 yards results in a first down. Bledsoe's average was 31%.

Romo averages 9.05 yards per attempt on these passes. Bledsoe averaged 5.96

This also reflects better red zone performance by Romo...

Inside Opp 20-yard line
Romo 6 of 9.......67%....3TD...1int...70.1 rating
Bledsoe 8 of 21...38%....4TD...2int...46.3 rating

Amazing that, in five and a half games, Bledsoe only completed 8 passes inside the red zone.

I like Romo's 9 yards per attempt... I believe thats pretty consistent in the time he has been playing QB going back to college...

He is just shy of a first down per attempt...

I'm not usually a stats guy but those stats tell a very interesting tale. ;)

YAC doesn't figure into the "pass thrown 1-20 yards" stat.

If the pass is thrown short of the first down marker, YAC can get the first down. But YAC isn't why we're getting more first downs with Romo. Completion percentage is.

I think it's hard to compare because Romo hasn't played nearly as many snaps as Bledsoe has this year, but the numbers are very telling as to Bledsoe's effectiveness in the short passing game... And his numbers are absolutely atrocious in the redzone. That's very interesting.

Although it is a small sample size for Romo, it's evident that his quick release and ability to make decisions quickly enhances the short passing game and the redzone passing. Good research.

Thanks to SI.com

Bledsoe knew he had lost it. He was trying to cover up for his red zone ineffectiveness by sacrificing his body, throwing himself into the end zone for a couple of TD's. Way out of character from what he's always done in his career. He's got guts, I'll give him that.

Bledsoe completion % is 54%... Romo's? 72%.

That's what will keep this team's offense running at an efficient clip the rest of the season.

You want to know a big reason why Bledsoe is no longer in NE, Buffalo or the starter for Dallas? It's right there. The guy is horrible when it comes to the short pass... just horrid. And he's been that way for years. Why we signed him originally is beyond me. Purcells' had his head up his butt on that one.

Yeah I have to say that you did call that one way back and were right. Although I have to say I thought the 05 version of Bledsoe was pretty decent. I don't know if he declined or if the NFC teams caught up, but it hasn't been pretty this year. What sealed it for me was even in the games where he got great protection he looked just ok, not great.

As far as the signing, Parcells obviously thought he could game plan around Bledsoe's strengths and weaknesses. We know how that turned out.

Excellent, excellent post and thanks for the info. I always felt Bledsoe was not an accurate short-intermediate passer and this really demonstrates this.

I think what he means is that YAC doesn't factor into whether the pass was thrown 1-20 yards. For example, a pass thrown 18 yards with 50 YAC. Will be in the "pass thrown 1-20 yards" split, and it will go down as a 68-yard gain. So the stats themselves DO include YAC.
