After the Carolina game, I have a little bit more confidence in Romo than I did at halftime of the Giants game.
He did a good job of what he was asked to do. The coaches did a heck of a job bringing back the Quincy Carter playbook and asking romo to complete the dinks and dumps. Quincy was fairly successful with this playbook, but I actually think Romo did a little better.
Romo made a couple of mistakes that were expected but did a pretty good job running the offense. TO actually got away with a pass interference that saved a likely interception. Romo was horrible trying to throw the deep ball. The defense and special teams played very well and Carolina played horrible.
Joe Montana and Donovan McNabb are two other QB's that dont throw a very good deep ball, but do/did well with the dinks and dumps. The problem with that type of offense, as Quincy learned in the big games, is that you have to put together to many successful plays in a row to keep a drive alive. Keep in mind that we dominated Carolina and were still punting to Steve Smith midway through the 4th quarter with a seven point lead.
Montana and Mcnabb were always rescued by playmakers getting the ball short and making long plays with their talent. (Jerry Rice 7 yard cross going 75 yards for TD and Westbrook taking a screen and 3 defenders 40 yards for a TD. This is also the most likely plan for Romo.
With this type of offense, a penality or a negative play can kill the drive and force you to do something you are not good at. One thing Romo did good on a couple of occasions was convert on some third and longs with some good throws. I was very excited about that.
Having said that, I'm not sure Carolina was up to the task of testing Romo in a big game. Whether you love or hate Drew Bledsoe, you have to admit that the results against Carolina wouldn't have been any different if Bledsoe played the game.
I'm not sure that the Commanders of this year are ready to test Romo on the same level that "tested" Bledsoe last year in Washington. The team may be weaker, but playing their is never easy. The skins have surely looked at the tape and are going to play our run and make Romo throw the deep ball.
To win this game, Romo is going to have to put together a bunch of plays in a row and keep from getting baited into trying make deep plays with his arm.
If the Commanders play well, this will be a good game to see if the Giants game Romo shows up or the Carolina game Romo is for real.
Either way, I hate the Commanders.
