Romo's ball speed-was it 57?

Guys:

I seem to remember reading that Romo's ball speed at the combine was 57. Can anyone confirm that? Reason it came to mind is in the new Ourlad's draft report the fastest speed I saw was 55 by Flaco. That would mean that Romo had a faster ball speed than any of this year's QBs.

Comments?

Romo has the quickest release and yes he has great ball speed as well. His problem is he thinks he can do anything. And he almost can.

He was not invited to the combine, if I remember correctly, to work out as a contestant, but only to serve as one of the passers for the wide receiver work outs. He was there, but not as a contestant.

That was ridiculous when they showed the stat that Romo's release was faster than Marinos. I forgot which game it was though.

I was amazed.

Ya but romo has a average nfl arm, how many times did he underthrow our recievers ? Ecspecially on the deep ball. Hopefully he works on that arm strength this off season.

Perhaps. It's certainly not the strongest. A quick release, though, to me, is more important. With his accuracy, release, and ability to move in the pocket, Romo would be, IMO, the best west coast offense QB in the league if he played in a WCO system.

Romo impresses at Indy

Matthew Stevens/ Sports Reporter

Issue date: 2/25/03 Section: Sports

Eastern quarterback Tony Romo must have appreciated being in Indianapolis this weekend because at the NFL combine held in the racing capital of the world, he did everything fast.

"I wanted to show everyone that speed wasn't a problem," Romo said. "This was excatly why I worked so hard for two weeks in Florida, and it payed off."

The NFL prospect was placed in the second group Sunday afternoon along with Southern California's Carson Palmer, Louisville's Dave Ragone and Texas' Chris Simms.

Romo earned the second-fastest time in the shuttle run and was timed at 4.9 seconds in the 40-yard-dash.

"Basically, that's why I went to Florida, to increase my speed, and I feel like I'm a completely different player since I left," Romo said.

Romo impressed even himself during the IQ test by answering correctly 37 of 50 questions in only 12 minutes. The highest score last season during the combine was 41 and most quarterbacks only got through 22 questions.

"The whole point of the test was to see how quickly you can process the information given," Romo said.

The 2002 Walter Payton Award winner astonished many scouts in throwing drills after being clocked at 57 mph, which is impressive compared to future Hall of Fame Green Bay Packer quarterback Brett Farve's 61 mph.

"My arm strength has gotten much stronger since my last game at Eastern," Romo said.

Romo ended the day by answering question from the media for a day-long record of nearly 38 minutes until Simms stayed at the podium for 45 minutes after Romo.

"It was cool that the media wanted to talk to me but it didn't even seem like I was up there for that long," Romo said.

Throughout the afternoon, Romo interviewed with quarterback coaches and offensive coordinators from the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears.

"I have no idea who might take me but the teams that I interviewed with are the ones who really like me," Romo said.

Predictions on which round Romo will be selected have ranged from the third to the seventh round in next April's NFL Draft. However, Romo and his International Management Group team are confident in his status.

"It changes everyday, but I think I really solidified myself this weekend," Romo said. "People think agents know everything before the draft, but the NFL is so secretive with everything."

Romo went into the RCA Dome with high exceptions and was not nervous about the weekend workouts.

"The prediction was even if I didn't perform well, it was because I was a small-town guy, but I went there with something to prove," Romo said.

Romo was invited to the 03 combine and certainly did work out. He ran the 40 in 4.9, made all the throws necessary & was very accurate, got a 37 or 39on his wonderlic which was the highest of any player in 03 & was expected to be a 2nd day pick. Don't remember his ball speed.

Supposedly he wasn't draft for any of the following reasons: he throw sidearm & could get intercepted too often or balls knocked down, he ran too slow, he was too short, he came from a small college & might have difficulty transiting from Div II to the NFL, etc.

BTW: During Cowboys-Packers game, Chris Collingsworth was discussing why Romo was so good so soon. One of the reason he cited was Romo's quick release. He mentioned several QBs (including Elway, etc.) but pointed out that Marino was perceived by most everyone to have the quickest release ever at 3.0. BUT then stated he checked out Romo just to see where he stood and was amazed to find out that Romo had an even quicker release of 2.6. Collingsworth went on to state the quick release was a big factor cause defenders just couldn't react in time to his throw, his accuracy in the pocket & particularly on the run, ability to look off defenders with his eyes but also his feet, etc. Went on to say that Romo's play in that game & the season was simply outstanding & that he was playing at such a sophisticated level (in only his first full year as a starter) that he was truly remarkable & unbelievable player & fun to watch as well.

Those under thrown passes were not due to a lack of arm strength. He just made poor throws or in a couple of instances he did not set his feet and use good mechanics. I would say his arm is just above average and certainly strong enough for the NFL.

Its funny. I saw all this in the Seattle 2006 preseason game. In my 30 years watching Cowboy football I dont think I've been more impressed/surprised by a single game performance.

I had zero expectations of Romo and was pissed Henson wasnt starting!:lmao2:
So here I am furious I have to watch this and BANG! Out of nowhere the Tony Montana Romo guy is firing the ball all over the place looking better than I can remember a Cowboy QB looking.

That's so funny because I was thinking the same at the same time. I was up in the DC area with my brother watching the game and I can remember being angry because Henson was leaving the game. When Romo came in I was amazed at his ability to see the field.

Chaulk me up for being an idiot about Henson...
