What does "Romo friendly" mean? Is there any substance to Jerry's spin?
At first, I said no... just an excuse to get rid of TO.
BUT... I was watching some NFL playbook and started to think about a lot of great QBs who make receivers, rather than the other way around.
For instance,
Tom Brady carried scrubs to multiple SBs (Branch was their best, enough said).
Brett Farve always seemed to make a new guy into a good receiver (Javon Walker, Donald Driver, even Jennings, Bubba Franks, so many I can't name 'em all. All guys without a ton of natural talent, not legit #1s except Jennings now, not then).
Drew Brees makes stars out of Lance Moore, Marques Colston. It just seems like it doesn't matter to him, as long as the guy goes where he supposed to.
And I think that's the point. T.O. couldn't be counted on to go where he's supposed to. Remember all the times Romo would have to break huddle and then whisper to TO what he just said? Or the bad routes? Or the dropped balls? But always the demanding the ball... even when the read says go elsewhere.
Now, we have guys who Romo trusts. He grew up with Hurd and Austin. He loves Witten. He knows Barber. He seems like he's learning Roy. And Roy may not be spectacular, but he's a smarter and less roller-coaster a player than TO. And he doesn't kill drives with showboating or dropped passes or failing to knock down a jumpball.
Great QBs take what teams give them, spreading the ball around, and just hitting guys with good matchups. Romo can do this. I've seen it. If he buys into it, he could be great.
Kinda seems like Jerry's not just puffing smoke here. I think he may have just gone all-in on Romo's development.
