When Wade recently said words to the effect of, "We got away from Witten in the red zone. We need to get back to him," he wasn't kidding.

edit: Here's the exact quote:“There are things that Tony [Romo] and our receivers have done down there that are consistent and we try to do more of those,” Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. “[Jason] Witten comes to mind more than anybody. We had been getting it to him a lot in the red zone. We didn’t do it quiet as much last year. We shouldn’t have gotten away from that.”

One of Roy's biggest positives is as a redzone threat. Hell, 6 TDs in 14 passes shows that pretty clearly. That 14 attempts needs to go up next season. I remember when Brad Johnson threw a corner endzone fade to Roy just after we acquired him. I was at that game and thought, "This should be fun to watch for years (with Romo)." But Romo never throws that route to Roy. Very odd.

That's the main thing I'm hoping to see this fall, namely getting Witten back more into the offensive mix. Some worship Austin, others beat glue out of Williams, etc., but Witten has always been a bonafide, all-pro weapon both inside and outside the redzone his entire career. He doesn't receive enough fan appreciation for his all-around game. Hopefully, he will have more opportunities this season to remind those who do not.

Good post.

I love your sig.
It looks like I won't have to take Graham and Unitas out of it next year, after all.

Thanks for waking me up.

Someone on here has said this, but I forget who. I completely agree however.

"Garrett needs to quit getting 'cute' in the red zone".

...case in point...Denver game. I still get mad about TWO failed passes in the red zone.

I want to see us throw it to Roy and Bennett up high where they can go get it. Bennett especially. I don't think many DBs can get up where he can. TDs in the redzone are often about concentration. On QB and receivers. I also think Dez's sure hands will play a huge factor this year.

I think we have some good weapons but this team needs to do a better job of focusing and executing when we get into the redzone. Yards are tough to get down there and when you have negitive plays and penalties it becomes that much harder. For those think put it soley on Garrett, I disagree but do believe he shares in the blame as the OC.

Romo needs to work on his endzone fades like Roy needs to work on his routes.

I agree. That is one area where Romo needs to improve and not just with RW but with another big target in Bennett.

If you remember back to opening day in Tampa last year, Romo threw what ended up being a back shoulder fade to Bennett, and was lucky it wasn't picked. Bennett got up and pointed up as if to say "Get the ball up."

We never went back to it all year.

So you see Bennett as a kind of a modern R.C. Owens?

"It's got to be the Alley Oop, there's no time for anything else!" Y.A. Tittle to R.C. Owens was money near the goalline.

We definitely don't target Witten in the redzone enough.

BTW Percy, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the stats you post here. Thanks for posting them!   :starspin :starspin :starspin

Romo's always been terrible at the fade.

Thanks. Here's a couple more:

Since the NFL draft began in 1936, there is no precedent for Romo-Bryant. This is the first time ever that the first or second WR chosen as high as 24th has gone to a division winner with a QB who was top 3 in passing yards the year before.

10 of Romo's 15 red zone TD's last year came out of 3-WR sets.

Everything in this post is SPOT ON. We have these huge dudes on our team from Roy to Bennett to Witten and now Dez, I pray that we ditch the razor back in the red zone, and attack the end zone more often with ANY 1 on 1 coverages and just allow these guys to do what they do.
