Ron Leary wants to play Sunday but strained groin might keep him out

Cowboys left guard Ron Leary probably won’t play in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a strained groin. But Leary badly wants to play and will do everything he can to play, he said Tuesday.

“That’s the goal,” Leary said. “I’m going to take it day by day. This is a game I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. This is a big divisional game, so I’m going to take it day by day, do all the treatment and we’ll see on Sunday.

Leary missed the Arizona game in 2014 when he strained the other groin. It is the only game he hasn’t started in his three seasons with the Cowboys.

Leary played 52 of 71 plays against the Giants, leaving in the second half.

Not bad for an undrafted FA.:) Gotta love the effort and we know he will do everything he can to get ready. I am so glad no one took him off the practice squad a few years ago. Can't ask for much more of an offensive lineman than Leary.

Might be awhile before it comes to that. The general consensus is Collins isn't mentally ready.

Pretty sure he is mentally strong enough to handle it. One thing that was sure from his interview the day he arrived, was his inner strength.

I think he means knowing how to handle twist, zone rushed, blitzes and such
Not saying he's dumb but there is something every young lineman has to learn
And when you have a solid vet to step in its not worth the risk to start him
As to Leary I think you set him till 100%
Groins can linger and it's a long season
If Leary is out a couple weeks Collins could get a few snaps which would be good for him but too risky to start him

Leary doesn't want to be Wally Pipp...I respect his competitive nature and toughness.

I can understand that, but Collins isn't exactly Gehrig at this point... I would rather have him healthy as he is an integral part of this OL...

I think Berny would start anyway, with Collins getting PT as backup.

Berny almost got Romo killed on the last drive, which probably would've ended the game. The DL hit him with a quick swim move and was by him in 1/2 second. Fortunately it was a quick dump-off pass to Dunbar.

Pretty sure they'll isolate Fletcher Cox on that LG position all day, whether it's Leary, Bernie or Collins

I honestly hope Leary doesn't play. I'm not looking forward to him trying to be a hero and the getting abused all day again by Fletcher Cox like last year. If he's not 100% he shouldn't be active.

I hear ya Trickblue but Leary knows the pedigree Collins has and the measures the team took to court him.

To be technical (and not being a smart aleck) but Collins is Gehrig at this point in the sense that Gehrig was a heralded prospect that was not a starter and barely playing at the time he replaced Pipp. In actuality, although very good, Leary is not Wally Pipp at this point. Pipp was considered one of the best power hitters in baseball until Ruth took that title from him and he had to be the clean up guy on those Yankees clubs. Leary is not considered one of the best guards in football although he is a solid/very good player.

Bottom line is...the Boys invested in a first round talent guy with a fully guaranteed deal, courted this talented guy, allowed for a competition at the LG position (one that Leary won decisively) and Leary is in a contract year so...I totally understand him not wanting to give anyone a chance to take his spot.

I'll tell you one player who is definitely ready and has been looking forward to this game since Murray signed with the Sheagles: Tyrone Crawford.

Collins struggled with stunts and blitzes in the preseason games.

The main reason is probably because LSU rarely passed the ball. When I studied his college game footage, they seemed to run the ball 90% of the time.

It's difficult to know how much of his preseason struggles were due to playing next to guys that are not even on the team now, but he did struggle with it.

Picking up stunts is not about intelligence per se. The biggest part of it is timing. If your timing is off just a little, it's almost impossible to recover.
