actually I rarely acuse people of spinning, but this stuff with Rivera is a case of "if the shoe fits...."

Not really. I didn't like the idea of the guy coming here. I don't think there's anything really special about him. However, the statements which you've labeled as spinning are perfectly reasonable, and within the set of known facts appear most likely. You can cast off anything as a case of "the shoe fit[ting]," but the same could be said of your reaction to and explanation for the facts as we know them.

talk about taking a step down...

It's not a step down or demotion.

There is no pecking order or totem pole on a coaching staff.

It's a lateral move from DC for the Bears to 2nd string LB coach in SD.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Rivera acually running the draft and calling the D on Sundays.

I hear Ron Rivera makes a mean cup of coffee.:laugh2:  :laugh1:

Next stop DC of the Dallas Desparados.

How does the Golden Boy of defense look now being relegated to linebackers coach after being in charge of a young Bears defense..

Some would have you believe he didn't just get a giant demotion.

and you can never rule out Rivera wanting to coach with the GREAT Norval Turner........

really who can blame the guy? He gets a lesser job, sure but hes going to be under one of the greatest head coaches of all time.

Did I miss something? Must be pure sarcasm....cause we all know Norv and great shouldn't be in the same sentence. :laugh1:

And to add...talk about demotions. Chicago and Lovie must have just became tired of Rivera always interviewing for other HC positions instead of being focused on his current job. We all know, his defense sure didn't come to play during the Super Bowl when he was campaigning hard for any and every HC position out there.

Then again, I did hear that Lovie's other Defensive assistant...forgot his name, was very talented and he didn't want him to leave so he just promoted him to DC.

Either way...Rivera definitely took a step back in taking this position but a job is a job at this point in the offseason.

Rivera leaves Bears, joins Chargers

11:56 PM CST on Monday, February 19, 2007

Associated Press

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Chicago defensive coordinator Ron Rivera was out of a job, but not for long. Just hours after the Bears announced Monday he wouldn't be retained, the San Diego Chargers gave him a two-year contract to coach their linebackers.

Rivera, who has talked with eight NFL teams about their head coaching positions over the last two seasons, had a three-year contract with the Bears that was set to expire next week.

After it was announced he wouldn't be coming back to the Bears, Rivera vowed he would land another job.

And he did, getting a deal to join new Chargers coach Norv Turner. Rivera had just interviewed for San Diego's head coaching job last weekend.

"It's just time to move on again, so I will move on and I will prosper. I will bounce back. I will get an opportunity," Rivera said during a conference call before his Chargers' job was announced.

But the decision by Bears coach Lovie Smith not to keep Rivera came as a surprise to many, especially the timing – a little more than two weeks since the Bears lost the Super Bowl. Rivera said he never started talks on a new contract with Chicago.

"It's just something that Coach decided he was going to shuffle his staff and we'll go from there," Rivera said.

Rivera said he wanted to return and was told a few days ago he wouldn't.

Was there a personality conflict with Smith?

"No, no, no, no, please. I don't think there is. I really don't," he said.

"I believe this is just a football decision and it was made. Emotionally, I'm disappointed in not getting the opportunity to come back in '07 because as I said at the end of the year after the loss that this is a football team that's headed in the right direction."

Smith, a defensive-oriented coach, insisted there no philosophical differences with Rivera.

"As much as anything, it's just a fit that we have and right now the direction I would like to go and the direction that Ron would like to go, we're going in two different directions," Smith said during a conference call.

"It's been my goal all along to help Ron, to do everything I could to get Ron an opportunity to get a head football coaching job and it's no more than that. We've tried to do that. Ron had a contract. I don't see it as a firing or anything like that. His contract expired and he wants to go in one direction, and I'd like to go in one. No more than that."

Rivera was a linebacker on Chicago's Super Bowl champion team in 1986 and then led a defense that helped the Bears make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Chicago had trouble containing Indianapolis in the Super Bowl, losing 29-17 to the Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis Colts.

Rivera has been an assistant coach for 10 years in the NFL beginning as a quality control coach with the Bears in 1997. He spent five years with the Philadelphia Eagles as their linebackers coach and the last three in charge of Chicago's defense.

The Bears led the NFL with 44 takeaways in the regular season, but the defense was slowed in the latter stages of the season after injuries to defensive tackle Tommie Harris and safety Mike Brown.

Smith didn't elaborate when asked if there were things about Rivera's performance he did not like.

"Those are the things Ron and I talked about," Smith said. "We feel good about the things we did together during that time, but no more needs to be said about that. That's between he and I."

Rivera was a candidate last season for head coaching jobs in Green Bay and St. Louis. This year he talked with Pittsburgh, Miami, Atlanta and Arizona before the Bears started postseason play. After Chicago lost the Super Bowl, he interviewed for coaching vacancies at Dallas and with the Chargers.

Smith, who has a year left on his contract and could be in line for an extension, said he would move quickly to replace Rivera. Linebackers coach Bob Babich is considered a top candidate.

Well, whatever the case for Rivera, as content as I am with Wade and Garrett, the combo of Norv, Cotrell, and Rivera seems awfully good.

Yeah. It will be. The Chargers did themselves some good today in one fail swoop. There's a lot to be said about both the Cowboys and Chargers helping themselves this off season in the coaching departments. As thankful as I am that Norval didn't come back here, I can acknowledge the fact that he will be a good fit for the Chagas. The key to hiring him was getting a very good mind on the defensive side of the ball. The Chagas helped themselves to two of em. Cottrell and Rivera together will keep that defense on track.

If Riveria is coming in as the linebacker coach, what does that mean for Pagano who I think was the linebacker coach under Phillips. Or was Pagano a defensive coach at another position? I think Brian Stewart was the Charger defensive back coach under Phillips who express in interviewing them both. I wonder if we've got any chance at either of them now if we ask Chargers again or if either of them ask to come to Dallas to become our DC. Interesting things might happen in next 1-2 days.

Pagano was the Asst LB Coach / Quality control. He was specifically responsible for developing our outside linebackers. The Chargers have already said he will be kept. AJ isn't going to allow any more assistants to make lateral moves this offseason. We've lost 5 already.

You can have Stewart, though. :) Our biggest weakness on defense for the last 5 years has been the secondary and it always seems to be the same problems... poor ball-awareness, poor positioning, dropped interceptions... the kinds of things you'd like to see a DB's coach fix. He's only had 3 first-rounders and a second-round draft pick to work with, though...so maybe we're just not giving him the talent.

Stewart is a Marty-guy, and Marty is loyal to his guys to a fault. Now that Marty's not there many of us would like to see Stew "upgraded."

So instead of a promotion to a HC position Rivera takes a step down from DC to LB coach? Wow, that must suck.

I would have thought that there would be several teams willing to bring him in as a DC but he seemed to just jump at the Chargers job for some reason. Emotional decisions rarely work out.

I think this gives him the experience in the 3-4 which seems to be the 1 reason why he hasn't gotten HC job somewhere. If he had 3-4 exp. he would be our HC right now. This gives him a chance to erase the 1 major void on his resume.

Hey - I would have brought him on as a LB coach.

It does kind of say alot about a guy - who was interviewing for HC gigs - that the best job he could manage was a LB coach for a team who was scrambling to replace their decimated staff.
