Ronald Leary: Starter?

I know Jerry was real excited about him signing as a rookie FA a year ago and they had a third-round grade on him. Given our lackluster talent at the position, do you see much hope for Leary to take a starters' role in 2013?

I think he can be our starting RG if he has improved with a full off-season.

We gotta see him play. It shouldn't be hard for him to beat out a starter.

What im curious about is what they will do with Frederick. If Costa or Kowalski is 1 of our best 3 interior guys than i'd hate to see them on the sideline.

Callahan seemed to be more excited about him than Jerry. I guess we wait until training camp to see if he can take over the role of starter.

I thought they said that we had a 5th round grade on him, but that he'd been rumored to go as high as the 3rd.

Either way, we seem to like the work he did on the PS last year, and that's a good thing. And he reportedly needed to mostly work on his conditioning in camp last year. He's a guy who could definitely develop at a position of need, and the team seems to be pretty high on him.

I remember it as they had a 3rd round grade on him but they weren't going to use a pick on him because of the questions about the knee.

If he fully healthy and has a great camp I don't see why not honestly

Might have been that. "If it weren't for the knee, we'd have had a 3rd round grade on him." And I just discounted that because, obviously, he did have the knee condition.

Anybody watched his college tape? I can't seem to find much - if any - film of him online in-game. I'd like to get some impressions on his actual play from one of you guys and not some so-called professional.

There is some more Leary discussion here:

I'll repost my comment:
I think they believe that Leary has the ability to start; however, I don't know how many inexperienced players they will want on the OLine. Frederick will be a rookie starter. If Parnell starts, that would be 2 inexperienced guys out of 5.

Honestly, I too had big expectations for him, but the fact that he could barely get on the 53 man roster last year when we had some of the worst guard play in the league does not give me high expectations for him.

camp will tell. right now we have no reason to believe he will win the starting job based on what we have seen. but camp is where he will have an opportunity to earn the job and the competition is not that strong. if he can't win the job this year then i think it's safe to say he won't ever win the job

That by the way it what really makes me crazy about ignoring guard in this draft. Livings, Bernardo, Arkin, Costa, Leary, Kowalski..and so on..there is no way that there won't be 5-10 guards taken AFTER the 3rd round that won't turn out to be better than one or all of these guys! It's not like we were trying to upgrade over Larry Allen.

God bless Tony Romo if Costa and Kowalski are our best interior linemen. We'll be looking up at 8-8!
