Rousseau Voted Most Overrated Prospect

With every NFL draft, there are some prospects who receive a lot of media accolades but who NFL scouts are not nearly as high on. That can lead to some "surprising" draft-day slides for the media and fans that aren't actually surprising at all to NFL teams. BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1 recently surveyed a number of team sources as to who they believed was the most over-rated/over-hyped prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft. The overwhelming reponse returned was that Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau has a much higher profile with public than with teams.

After missing 2018 with an ankle injury, Rousseau broke out in 2019 with 15.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, 19.5 tackles for a loss and 54 tackles. Beyond that production, Rousseau has good size at 6-foot-7, 265 pounds, so teams were eager to see him in 2020, but Rousseau decided to sit out the season. That has left teams having to pore over his 2019 tape very closely.

"If you really watch [Rousseau] and focus in on him, he is not a fast or explosive pass rusher," said an area scout. "He is long, but not physical and the sack total is misleading. He will have to become a power player, and it might take a year or two for that to happen, if it ever does."

Other evaluators mentioned Rousseau not being fast, explosive, or physical as well. They also cited him being a 1-year wonder, and sitting out the 2020 season did nothing to assuage concerns the 2019 season could have been a flash in the pan. Another area scout said their team had a third-round grade on Rousseau. Despite Rousseau being viewed as overrated, all of the team sources thought he would be an early-rounder and likely to go in the mid- to late portion of the opening night of the 2021 NFL Draft. This is considered a weak class for defensive line talent, which is always a need around the league, so Rousseau faces less first-round competition compared to a typical year.

Other prospects who received votes for being the most overrated included Northwestern offensive lineman Rashawn Slater, Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain and Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons.

A couple of team sources said they had Surtain graded as a late first-rounder and felt that is where he belongs because he is not a twitchy corner with sudden movement skills. They believe he will need to be protected and not matched up against certain NFL receivers. Thereby, they think he is a reach as a pick in the top half of the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. They have Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley and South Carolina's Jaycee Horn graded over Surtain.

As reported in the Hot Press in February, sources from multiple teams say Parsons is getting hurt significantly for character concerns. Some sources call Parsons underwhelming as a player. Those sources believe Parsons is a "clean air" linebacker who is not real physical in terms of taking on blocks and doesn't play downhill.

A few team sources said they had a second-round grade on Slater because they don't see him as a tackle in the NFL. "The media was talking up his tape against Chase Young, but it was not as impressive as I expected," said an area scout. "We see [Slater] as a guard and have him in Round 2."

While Rousseau, Slater, Surtain and Parsons received are perceived as overrated by sources around the league, it only takes one team to fall in love. All four of these prospects are stil expected to be selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft despite some teams thinking they are overhyped player.

I thought I was the only one that thought Slater vs Young got overhyped. Thought I was missing something.

If Pitts and Parsons are gone then idk what they do. I still like Slater, but something is up with him...I’m not sure what maybe because he’s barely 300lbs, seams to run ridiculously fast, and kind of looks uncomfortable with a kick step at his pro day

Haven't watched Slater. Rousseau was ok, but I liked Phillips from Miami. Sidenote: the DE from Pitt is good.

Surtain does look to be vulnerable to twitchy route runners, but most CBs are. A system like Quinn's could hold Surtain as more valuable than others.

When I heard snippets of Parsons actions at Penn St. I was off him, and his play didn't offset that.

damn. Pitts It is then
Bro, I don't think he's gonna make it to the pick.

I’m not too old to remember “draft pundits” saying Randy moss had attitude issues and could possibly be a locker room cancer. We passed on him for Greg Ellis. Fun fact, a round later the Dolphins selected Patrick Surtain Sr.

Do not let the ghost of Randy moss continue to haunt us, this Surtain kid is a no brainer if he’s there at #10.

Honestly at this point im just messing with some of the posters on here because so many have there hearts set on going nothing but defense till like the 6th round. Continuously talking about Slater and Pitts gets them riled up. I don't even really know what i want to do at 10 anymore. I feel taking Pitts or trading back is what Jerry and Stephen plan on doing.

That is the weirdest comparison I've seen. Surtain who is a darn good player because of his technique but he is not the physical freak that Randy Moss was nor does he have that baggage. I could see the comparison if it was to Kyle Pitts as far as a physical freak.

Micah Parsons & Kelvin Joseph are the baggage guys.

I still believe parsons and surtain will be very good starters in the nfl. Even slater. I feel these articles come out to put these players down in hopes they fall to certain teams.

I’m on the Phillips bandwagon. Check out Slater, he’s a strong blocker and Sewell will likely be gone

don’t count out anyone this year. If mac jones goes in the top 10 that means there will be a great talent when we pick no matter what

Rashawn Slater: 6'4" 304 with 33" arms
Rookie Zack Martin: 6'4" 308 with 32 7/8" arms

Slater will be all right.

I would take Surtain or Slater at 10, but a trade back with a chance to get another second would be very appealing. I saw an article yesterday saying that with the restructuring of Smith and Collins contracts OT might be off the board in the first round. I don't live in the Dallas area but Jeff Cavanaugh had a good video with John Owning of DMN on the best edge rushers and they ranked Rousseau 10th out of 10th.

I think Rousseau is overhyped if you are talking Top 10. I dont think he is a true DE in the NFL, at least not initially. I think he is a guy you kick inside on passing downs. He is more like an Arik Armstead than a true edge rusher.

Interesting takes on Surtain and Slater. Always good to hear a dissenting opinion.

I think Barmore is going to bebthe opposite. I think he is going to be a guy FO's value more than the media does

I remember one ex scout used to come out with information about a month before the draft basically ripping every prospect. He got in trouble for saying Cam Newton was arrogant and I think he retired. For the most part his inside information was spot on for players. I forgot his name though.

The guy came on the radio in Baltimore years ago. He is what Broaddus calls an old crusty. He would rip players for their personality, what type of shape the players were in and if he thought a player wanted to play football. He was right about lots of players.
