OL: Free, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Columbo
...Brewster .......Proctor .......McQuistan (or a pickup)
(a OG backup)
QB: 3
RB: 3 + a FB or 4th TE
TE: 3
WR: 5 (Austin, Roy, Crayton, Bryant, Ogletree)
K, P, Snapper: 3
DL: Spears, Ratliff, Olshanski
Bowen, Salavi, Hatcher 6 bare minimum
ILB: Brooking, James, J.Williams, Lee +Carp for the nickel (unlikely we'd rely on a rookie.
OLB: Ware, Spencer, B.Williams, Butler 8 bare minimum
CB: 4 Jenkins, Newman, Scandrick, +1
S: 4 Ball, Sensabaugh, M. Hamlin, Watkins
That's 50 guys without even considering a 7th DL or 10th OL or all the extra LBs we carried last year for Special teams.
The bottom line is there were few players who were going to step right in and earn a roster spot over the draft picks from last year. The Sean Lee pick does give me extra concern that maybe the coaches realize Jason Williams was a bad pick last year...at least he must be no where near ready to get on the field if Brooking or James get hurt.
We really don't have much room for a developmental O-lineman like the kid from USC who is talented but no where near NFL ready according to everyone. When you hope to be at the top with a talented team, it's hard to use roster spots for 2-3 years to develop guys the way you do when you're not a very good team to begin with.
The Cowboys can't have backups at S and OL who are equal to the starters, but they do need players who can step right on the field and hold their own so that an injury doesn't sink the season.
We may still draft an OG or weaker OT who can move to OG to compete in camp for one of the returning guys' positions. We may still draft a DB, probably a physical corner who isn't viewed as a top line CB who can move to S, and maybe that guy will push Watkins off the roster, but Watkins can play either safety spot and has, and he's a very effective Special Teams guy.
I like our draft...we picked up a WR who might do amazing things this year, even if it's merely with the type of passes we threw to Ogletree last year, but I expect much more. We picked an ILB who will contribute right away on special teams, might push Carpenter for the nickel role at some point, and is probably the only ILB on the roster now who might be able to step right in if Brooking or James went down without a total disaster.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Flozell brought back, and I wouldn't be surprised to see us pick up any veteran O-lineman or DB after the draft or team cuts...no, they won't be future stars, but they'd be veterans of the NFL who would probably play better than the rookies who were available at the bottom of round 2 today.
Even if we don't find any other picks, I'm excited to see what we do with our 4th, 6th, and 7th.
And we've done a great job with UDFA's the past few years, including Ogletree last year...it's not over even when it's over tomorrow.
