It is rude to introduce Dak into a non-Dak related thread. It just is.
If that's your opinion. I can respect that.
If his is that he believes a rookie could or should start over Dak, then I can respect that too.

Opinions go both ways.
Freedom wasn't and isn't free trust me.

Dline or Oline in the 1st. Shiny new toys after that..
My only correction to your comment is to draft Dline AND Oline in 1st and 2nd. I will admit Robinson still being there at 26 (not happening) presents a very difficult choice.

As a lead up to the draft next week, it is worth considering what positions on the Cowboys for which a 1st round pick would potentially become a day 1 starter. Going back over the last 5 drafts, take a look at the Cowboys’ #1 picks:

2018 - LB Leighton Vander Esch
2019 - 1st round pick traded for WR Amari Cooper
2020 - WR CeeDee Lamb
2021 - LB Micah Parsons
2022 - OT Tyler Smith

That is 5 1st round picks for 5 day 1 starters, if you include WR3 as a starter in 2020.

Overall, since 2018, here are the starters produced in each draft.

2018: LB Leighton Vander Esch*, OG Connor Williams, WR Michael Gallup, DE Dorance Armstrong, TE Dalton Schultz, QB Mike White (started 7 games for Jets)

2019: OG Connor McGovern, RB Tony Pollard*, CB Michael Jackson (started 17 games for Seattle last year), S Donovan Wilson

2020: WR CeeDee Lamb*, CB Trevon Diggs*, DT Neville Gallimore (started 9 games as a rookie), Tyler Biadasz*

2021: LB Micah Parsons*, DT Osa Odighizuwa,

2022: OT Tyler Smith

Obviously, the Cowboys were unwise to cut CB Michael Jackson since he never cleared waivers and has become a starter in Seattle. They could have used him last year. And Gallimore has regresssd since his rookie season. Even removing Jackson, White and Gallimore, the Cowboys have netted 14 starters (so far) from their last 5 drafts. And TE Jake Ferguson, LB Damone Clark and CB DaRon Bland are poised to become starters in 2023. Others like DB Israel Mukuamu and OG Matt Farniok are going to be given a chance to be starters soon.

Having said all that, looking at the Cowboys current roster, what are the positions with roster holes at which a rookie 1st round pick is most likely to be able to step in as a Day 1 starter for this team? That might be a hint at what players the Cowboys might be considering for their 1st overall pick on Thursday night next week.

* Indicates Pro Bowl selection
I would trade back into the second round and draft a DT.

Personally, I think RB, TE and OG are the best options for a day 1 starter, although a premium DT would also have a chance. I don’t think a DE, CB, S or LB would be a day 1 starter. WR, QB, OC, and OT are set on offense in the short term.

Looking at Jane Slater’s recent tweet (referenced in the Draft Forum), she thinks the Cowboys top targets are RB Bijan Robinson - who would likely require a trade up to get, TE Michael Mayer, and OL Darnell Wright - who the Cowboys would convert to OG like they did with Zack Martin in 2014. Do you see any top DT’s that would replace Hankins or Odighizuwa as starters?
I would take here and now, TCU's WR Johnson, if the two RB's were not there.

Dumb answer with a personal agenda. You already know the Cowboys aren’t planning on finding a replacement for Dak this year, and any QB they draft wouldn’t be a day 1 starter unless both Dak and Cooper Rush get injured in training camp. There is 0% chance the Cowboys spend a 1st round pick on a QB this year.

So, why waste our time with your comment. It adds nothing of value to the thread, which is intended to be a legitimate question about what position the Cowboys can get a Day 1 starter. Frankly, I resent you including your comment in this thread. It is an insult to every other forum member. If you wish to bash Dak, and there may be many reasons to do so, please start your own thread so like-minded forum members can comment. But otherwise, please stop polluting other threads with your single minded agenda - no matter how legitimate it may or may not be.
first you could have answered without saying (Dumb answer)
second why not we can upgrade any position if we have the chance

I think the Cowboys could use a DT and OT the most. With RB being a concern by a bunch of avg guys behind Pollard. If. QB like Will Levis falls to 26 that would be a great opportunity to take a chance on a QB.
Great post! I would LOVE to see DT, OL and RB in any order with the first 3 picks.

The big question is Levis. If he is there at 26, I'm getting him. Last year he was considered the #1 pick in this draft. If he were healthy and didn't get hurt he would absolutely be a top 5 pick. Let him sit behind #4 for a couple of years because we all know we are stuck with Dak. If drafting Levis gets the Cowboys out of extending Dak, I'm completely on board.

1. You don’t KNOW that the Cowboys won’t look to address QB in this draft in an attempt to eventually replace Dak. No one knows that one way or the other.

2. I know this wasn’t directed at me, and I don’t have a dog in this fight, but there was really no reason to approach your reply so hatefully.

3. I don’t know why you feel the need to shut down a fellow poster like this. Often times a minority view turns out to be the correct one. (I called the Dez cut and it was a VERY unpopular point of view at the time).

4. Divergent opinions are what make this place great. Strong opinions are fine. But let’s not make it personal.

I don’t have an opinion on Levis but I think the Cowboys have one eye on the QB positional ranking.

This is a poor year for QBs anyway to frankly no interest.
RB is not a need; until Pollard proves he is not capable of carrying the load; I think that was the reason for the franchise tag. IF he shows he can he gets his contract.
Not exactly the way I would have done it but that looks to be the way its going.
Our BIG NEEDS are as follows: DT to shore up run D; TE that can block well and be a true threat in the red zone; OG since that need will be coming real soon; probably sooner than the clown show thinks.
Now we can certainly use another good CB; another LB; and another WR but they are NOT needs. Cook with what we have is good enough at WR; Gallimore is good enough at CB; and we will be drafting a LB sometime anyway.

Without looking at players in the draft

Immediate needs:
  • A left guard would start
  • A RB would see regular time (replacing Zeke)
  • A LB would see regular time (replacing Barr)
  • A 1T or 1/3 tech could start and replaced Watkins
  • A TE could start replacing Shultz
  • A WR could start ahead of Gallup
Long-term needs:
  • CB (Lewis, Gilmore, Diggs coming out of contract)
  • DE (Armstrong & Fowler coming out of contract, D-Law cuttable)
  • OT (Steele & Tyron coming out of contract)
  • OC (Farniok coming out of contract)
  • Safety (Kearse and Hooker coming out of contract)
  • QB (Dak only has 2-years)
Not considering who might be available at all in the draft I’d want one of the primary needs to be addressed rounds 1/2 with the long-term needs drafted later.
