Roster Spots

All of a sudden we have a bit of a roster crunch. We're at a full 53 men on the roster after signing Ralston and Sprinkle and waiving Brandon Knight, and we still have several guys who will need to come back on to the 53 in the near future. Those guys include:

La'el Collins
Demarcus Lawrence
Michael Gallup
Neville Gallimore
Kelvin Joseph

That's not counting guys like Darian Thompson or Sean McKeon, who may be more likely to be practice squad callups. Or someone like Trysten Hill, because who knows what his future is. Regardless, we're gonna need to clear 3 or 4 roster spots over the next month. I think it's at least a possibility that some other guys on the team get a short-term injury and have to go to IR and thereby free up a roster spot, so it's not a certainty we'll have to waive 3+ people. But I think we'll have to end up waiving at least a couple. Here are the possibilities as best I can tell:

Corey Clement
Ty Nsekhe
Jeremy Sprinkle (if they were to choose McKeon over him)
Maurice Canady

We have pretty good depth, most everyone else has either contributed in some way so far this season or is a rookie, which the team seems to have prioritized keeping roster spots for the last couple of years.

I hope Canady sticks.

I think Fehoko and Mukuamu are possibilities, too. Neither really has contributed much so the risk of other teams claiming them is not super-high. Both are really PS players right now that we kept on the roster because we could due to the COVID exemptions and IR.

I would not cut Mukuamu. No way. He was lights out in training camp and played well in preseason. Plus, he can play both Safety spots and a little of CB. Athletes with his height (6'4") and speed (4.36 40) are hard to find.

Mukuamu has played a total of 12 snaps so far. He also was a late-round draft pick. I think it would be a very calculated risk that he'd pass through waivers.

I think there's no chance he'd pass through waivers. Someone would take him.

That was one of my thoughts about Sprinkle. Once McKeon is ready, Sprinkle probably the likely cut there.
With Ralston, do they need Clement as he has not had many snaps except for late in the game.
Thompson last I seen was on PS IR, which I did not know they had one of those. LOL.
Nsekhe is most likely to go when Collins returns. If they want to do OL for OL swap. Trying to get Farniok to the PS is also possible.
Canady would be my choice to go for Joseph also, but I hope they find s way to keep him. Good depth and ST's.

Other possibilities, do they release Grier and keep only 2 QB's, put Grier on PS if he clears.

As for Gallup, I think they can get Feheko to the PS, or they may try Turner. No way they keep 7 WR's.
As for Gallimore, that is a tough one, this is where the 3rd QB spot could come into play.

I expect a cut or two will make little sense in the context of the current season. The team probably has an idea which free agents they won’t try to re-sign this off season and they have to consider current and future needs.

Unfortunately these dilemmas are often solved by other players getting banged up. It's bound to happen and depth is key. The FO is doing a nice job there and since I bash them enough, I've gotta offer up credit on this.

One thing....I don't see how they can cut Nseke unless Knight is brought back.

I'm not among those who think Collins can just move out there without issue. Not sure I trust Steele out there either. At least Knight has actually played there in an NFL game. The other two have not.

At this moment LT (Tyrons health and the severe drop to the backup) is my biggest concern on the entire team.

What's the deal with Donovan Wilson? I've been anxiously awaiting his return, and he doesn't even get mentioned anymore.

The injury report I found said "His Sunday status is to be determined." Hopefully he's back today!

He will.

They are bringing the kids along slowly....as they ought to.

Things like roster management and snap counts are being managed very well and it's nice to see.
The draft picks are under contract and we will be losing a lot of free agents next year.

Good problem to have

  • Possibilities:
    • DE …..Azur Kamara
    • DT …..Austin Faoliu
    • DT …..Justin Hamilton
    • CB …..Maurice Canady
    • QB …..Cooper Rush
    • QB …..Will Grier
    • RB …..Corey Clement
    • WR …..Malik Turner
    • TE …..Jeremy Sprinkle
    • OT .....Ty Nsekhe
  • Player for Player swaps:
    • DLaw replaces Kamara
    • Gallup replaces Turner.
    • Gallimore replaces Faoliu.
    • Joseph (Hamilton or Canady)
    • McKeon would likely bump Sprinkle if McKeon returns.
    • Collins replaces ?
      • Do they need 2 backup QBs?
      • Steele is obviously in the top 3 OTs when Collins returns making Nsekhe #4.
      • They can pay Nsekhe the same salary if he is on the practice squad.
      • Veterans are not subject to waivers after the trade deadline. It's their choice where to sign.
