It will be interesting on who's going to be the best in coverage via training camp/preseason.

Hmmm, I didn't see that coming. I would have thought Church was a slam dunk for Strong Safety.

Yeah, shouldn't the faster guy play FS? I thought Church was more of a SS. I guess not.

Ron Vanderlinden (a Penn State DC) wrote that the Tampa Bay Bucs, back when Kiffen was DC, were one of the best at disguising a 4-4 look. And if you're going to do that kind of thing, you better have a hybrid safety in the mix, not a pair of free safeties. And it has to be done fast, executed before the offense can respond, or else the opposing team throws into the flat constantly.

I may be in the minority but I think we will see more of Wilcox, Johnson (if he stays healthy) and Hamilton, especially on passing downs.

I trust Kiffin to find the best safety out of this bottleneck. Church has an advantage because of his experience (not that he's had much of that either)-- but everyone else on this roster is raw-- except Allen and he's only here as an emergency stater and ST ace.

To me Johnson has the measure-ables and playmaking ability I want from the FS position. I know he's a small school guy and his injury history is a huge concern-- but I really hope he can add a speed dimension on the back end we just haven't seen since Woody played for us.

In this scheme it really doesn't matter who is SS or FS....

It will be just like the Tampa 2 that Mike Zimmer installed under Dave Campo---interchangeable safeties. It really will not make an impact as neither will consistently be playing the traditional roles that are expected with one box and one center fielder. That is one of the reasons why they are excited about Wilcox. Both players need to be able to hit and cover. He is a hitter, far more than most in this draft.

Sorry in advance if this is old news.

I just saw that Barry Church will be playing Free Safety and that Matt Johnson, Will Allen, and JJ Wilcox will battle it out for SS.

I just hope it's Johnson. It would be really nice for one of these pet cats at safety to turn out and be around for a decade. Roy Williams was a tease. Patrick Watkins was a failure. Keith Davis. Justin Beriault. Gerald Sensabaugh. Veteran, rookie.. it doesn't matter. We plain suck at safety and have since Woodson. I miss Woodson.

Barry Church was evolving into a pretty good player. He was around the ball quite a bit in his short stint while healthy.

If he picks up where he left off then that is good for us and he'll be hard to beat out.

There has been a long line of suckage at safety, and although in our new system this move isn't a horrible sign....its not a good sign either. Really hoping we don't have another year of no support for our CBs we spent so many resources on, we need something out of the safety position, anything.

What I would like to see is that all of them get snaps in a game. I wish that the team would have more trust in the younger players to come help out the team.
