Roy on the Rome Show

Roy Williams was on the Jim Rome Show today. Nothing earth-shattering, but this is what I can remember:

-- Roy said that he and Romo "didn't talk at all" last year. Roy said he saw all the drama going on and saw the pressure Tony was under (he was talking about Owens wanting the ball, but didn't really come out and say it) and decided Tony had enough to worry about. So he never approached him.

-- He said he felt like he was "out in left field" last year, but now feels like he's "at shortstop" in the middle of the action. He said he and Tony have a great rapport now, as evidenced by the touchdown play. Roy said he changed his route from a post to a seam when he saw how the safety was trying to cover him, and Tony immediately picked up on what he was doing and threw a perfect strike.

-- When asked about the absence of drama this year, he said it's been good, but that the local media is usually trying to make something out of nothing. He said that's just part of being "America's Team" and he's fine with it.

-- He said they really want to win for Jerry this Sunday because it's the first game in the "house that Jerry built." He wants to score the first regular-season TD in the stadium, and said he will keep the ball if he does. He said he usually gives the ball to a kid.

I have to applaud Roy for this.

On TV I saw him give a kid in a Dallas Jersey the ball after he scored on that 66yard strike that is pretty darn cool IMO

I love Roy more and more every single day. The guy is a darn good WR, has the right attitude, and is going to have a great year for us as well as a great career here for us.

It would be nice if the Boys play with some Heart Sunday! Solid hard tackles on Jacobs would be nice too...

Ya that was very cool. I still can't believe they made him stop letting a kid be his assitant during training camp.

Roy is a better fit for this team than Owens.

He is not as good ..... but he is much more the team player.

All last season, all we got was the first sentence about lack of communication. It's nice to hear the reason behind it as it changes the implication completely.

-- He said he felt like he was "out in left field" last year, but now feels like he's "at shortstop" in the middle of the action. again, wonderful to hear.

Nice to see a Dallas "#1 WR" not get all caught up in the media.

-- He said they really want to win for Jerry this Sunday because it's the first game in the "house that Jerry built." He wants to score the first regular-season TD in the stadium, and said he will keep the ball if he does. He said he usually gives the ball to a kid.

Love his attitude here, as well. It shows it means something to him.

I've been fairly apprehensive about his place on our team since the trade and all the way through training camp. It's quotes like these and his performance last Sunday that's beginning to sway me. We've been hearing stuff like this from him for at least the last month and it's all positive. I know there will be bumps in the road but I think he's off to a fantastic start, especially attitude-wise, this season and I hope to see him and the team build on that.

I totally agree with that. Roy is not as physically talented as Owens but he is much more of a TEAM player and a better fit for this (well really ANY) team than "I-LOVE-ME-SOME-ME".

I rag on Owens a lot partly because I was just like that when I played in high School. I played OLB and was the star of our team. Our HC knew John McKay, who was at USC at the time and invited McKay to come and see his "star player".

I had a great game: 6 sacks and 2 INTs, one run back for a TD, but I also got flagged for 3 unnecessary-roughness penalties and an unsportsmanlike call, but that was part of my game. I liked to intimidate the opposing players with late hits and just stupid stuff like pushing them back down when they tried to get up.

After the game, the coach called me in to meet McKay. I was thinking he was going to offer me a scholarship right there (even though I was a freshman) Instead he lit into me about what a jerk I was and how he would never want a player like me no matter how talented I thought I was. I was completely crushed. I was expecting praise from him and got told how I was too much of an individual and how football is a team sport.

He told my coach right in front of me how pissed he was that he had wasted his time coming all the way down to see this dumb kid. I had to walk home afterwards and thought about what McKay had said to me. Unfortunately, my ego refused to accept his criticism and I just figured he was some crusty old guy who didn't understand REAL talent.

Two games later, I dislocated my shoulder and a few weeks later I wrecked my knee playing beach volleyball and didn't play organized football for another 6 years when I joined a semi-pro team. I had since then lost a lot of mobility but was still a good enough athlete to play pretty well at that level. All my life I've wondered what "might have been".

I eventually got what McKay was telling me but Owens has yet to understand that lesson. I see a lot of me in him, the same cocky attitude, the same overwhelming confidence in my athletic ability, the same Me-first mentality. The difference is that I was like that at 14 and he is still like that at 35.

Sorry for the life-story, just felt like sharing today I guess.

Me too. Now you can go ahead and get rid of Owens in your sig and replace him with Roy.

RW11 has been nothing but class since his arrival. Major props to him and he seems like a genuinely nice Texas feller.

On DC.com it shows a little more of his celebration.

He actually salutes some Soldiers and then throws up the hookem while going back to the sideline.

Exactly.

Although I'm betting that by season's end the argument could be made that RW 09 is just as good if not better then TO 09.

I was at the game and he scored in the endzone where I was seated. Pretty cool to give the kid the ball...

Even when the local Dallas media was dogging him, I knew Roy would be fine with the team.

The guy is a player with the right attitude that came into a locker room in turmoil last year.

We will continue to see the emergence of Roy W. this year, mark it down.
