did i hear talks on the radio yesterday that, the players were confused on the 3 4 and was asking questions even in December?

i remember Newman was frustrated on the radio and saying " they should let us play the game and stop worrying about stuff. Guys should just go out and play". I might be true they were real confused. damn 2 years of waste

he was alluding to the 3-4 how we played it...

I think the most telling quote from Hawaii was Ware's, when he said numerous players came up to him and asked "what was it you guys doing down there with the defense?" ....people were basically laughing about how bad it was

They probably were.

Zimmer undoubtedly did not have a firm enough command of the system. Todd Bowles was critical of him and it bled through to his secondary.

That would be enough to cause confusion.

You still think Zimmer was the biggest problem our D had?

The comment was probably going back to, I believe, the Thanksgiving game when players went to Zimmer and Parcells and asked to be able to free-lance and attack more in the game...

It was reported that they had a meeting leading up and were given the green light...

The results were better and for some reason we resorted back to the passive 3-4...

I don't blame Zimmer for the 3-4 for 2 reasons:

1) Right or wrong, he's a 4-3 coach as Philips is a 3-4 coach...

2) Parcells was calling the shots and signing off on the gameplans...

While Zimmer is the "DC", you workk within the gameplan established in practice...

There were two huge problems with our D last year. Both of those problems at no longer a part of the organization. Thank God.

He might not have been the entire problem, no.

But I cannot believe that there was one root cause for all the symptoms.

Coach Parcells was too rigid in his belief in his system. I will acknowledge that. But it has worked before. It just did not work with this set of players.

Mike Zimmer was too uneducated in the scheme to be able to convince his team when it's cerebral nature overwhelmed them.

There was a communication breakdown, somewhere. It is only obvious.

It is harder to blame several factors blended together. So people just pick the one they prefer.

I'm just happy Wade Phillips is the mastermind behind the Cowboys defense now! From a player aspect I think the Cowboys have equal or more talent than the Chargers had this past year so I'm extremely optimistic.

Zim from recent exit interview:

'"Well, we couldn't cover anybody for (the last) four weeks," Zimmer added. "Teams were spreading it out on us, and we were attempting to stay in base coverage."

Why? After a long pause, Zimmer said, "I don't have an answer for that."'

- Interpretation: Bill didn't attempt adjustments, I would have tried to. Zim's saying he either a) really couldn't understand why Bill didn't attempt adjustments or b) Bill was set in his ways and Zim just didn't want to disparage him in this interview. -

That's what I got out of it too. Bill was commanding Zim's puppet strings. That said, I'm glad they're both purged and Wade is now commanding the Defense. Wade will take these guys from laughing stock to scary scary presence quickly. He's a true 3-4 teacher that has a track record of success with aggressive schemes and quick implementation of his defensive scheme as well. The guys on D that "get it" next year are going to have some fun on the field.

Re-watch the games in December. Often times when an opposing team sent a guy in motion or whatever, the defense clearly struggled to communicate what they were supposed to do before the ball was snapped. I counted 3 times alone in the Seattle game where Ware wound up having to lock on Deion Branch out wide and then try to cover him.

It was really pathetic.

I think part of it was that the coaching staff had lost confidence in the secondary; and the players had lost conficence in the coaching staff. Bottom line was that BP should have gotten rid of Zimmer once he went to the 3-4; but either because he did not want to or JJ would not allow it it did not happen.

:hammer: Bingo.

Like you guys have said, it's so pathetic that

1) Our guys looked like they didn't know how or where to line up
2) Teams easily manipulated us to get the matchups they wanted
3) Players from other teams were asking what the heck we were doing
4) San Diego's players immediately said our guys would get to make more plays now
5) We refused to change a losing game even when we saw so much evidence it wasn't working

I bashed on Parcells a lot near the end, but I really did like the guy and the way he attempted to play the game. But his defensive strategy just didn't work, and he was too hardheaded to change. Sad to lose so many games just because of stubbornness.

And to think some wanted BP to stay or worse yet, Zimmer to take over at HC. :bang2:

But if you actually heard the interview, that's what it really sounded like in Zimmer's voice.

Not a big fan of reading into what people say, much less what is apparent in their pauses. It's a phone interview. That's an awful lot of "interpretation" ...more commonly known as BS. They couldn't teach the two-gap system to this group of players, oh well. Maybe he didn't want to throw our moron players under the bus. That pause and subsequent reply could mean anything, and in most cases, your interpretation will be based on what you want it to mean.

It's probably better left uninterpreted. Face value is much better, particularly on phone interviews.

Bingo! This is what I was thinking about. As the season wore on, it began to look like our defense didn't know how to line up in certain situations. It was very obvious to a casual viewer, we can only imagine what it looked like to knowlegeable viewers like opposing coaches.

:fact: Yes. This defense got much better the day Zimmer was fired. His basic no attack containment 3-4 defense sucked badlyand was a waste of talent.
