Rule change idea.

Thanking about the penalty on Harrison during the superbowl that resulted in a whopping half yard with the half the distance, I thought about a rule change to punish the offending team a bit more.

In situations where the result is offensive team losing "half the distance to the goal" the other team can either take the half the distance, or choose to leave the ball where it is and extend the first down markers half of the length of the penalty. So in Harrison's case, instead of it being at the 1/2 yard line, it would have still been at the 1, but they would have had to get to the 18.5 yard line for a first down.

Problem with that is that the offense would be being penalized for something they didn't do.

It would be like an offense declining a PI call b/c they caught a TD pass anyways, and then kicking off 15 yards ahead of normal.

I like the idea, but don't think it would work.

Well they have made rules recently that some fouls are done on the kickoff.

And they're being penalized for a penalty. If you commit a hold at the 1 yard line, who cares, it's just half a yard and a do over. If it makes it 2nd and 15 instead of 2nd and 10.5, they may start to reconsider.

I like it but with a little twist. I still think they should move the ball back "half the distance" but then they should extend the 1st down marker by whatever amount of the penalty is left. A 10 yard penalty on your own 10 yardline would become 1st and 20 from the 5 instead of 1st and 15 from the 5.

You'd have to be able to flip that rule too. if you're going to do away with half the distance penalties, then you have to do it when defenses commit penalties inside their own end. A facemask from the 16 would put an offense on the 1.

No, the TEAM would be penalized, not the offense. Isn't that the the entire purpose of penalties?

Good idea, I like it.

And Harrison would of have been ejected if he played for any other team besides Pitt.

Just saying.

I like it...how about adding the choice of losing the down as well?

The defense could choose between it being 1st and 20 or it being 2nd and 10
