Pittsburgh's a great big small town. Everyone's heard stories from a friend of a friend that he's treated a woman like dirt when he's drinking.
You'd be hard pressed to find a media that's more pro-team than Pittsburgh. It's the anti-Dallas in that regard so they've never touched him or any other Steeler. Add that Pittsburgh police have been known to cover for the team (he even had police with him acting as his bodyguards, a fairly common practice there) and any other city and he'd have been in jail years ago.
Maybe this will take the luster off the franchise enough that people will start looking into things like the rampant steroid abuse that occurs in that clubhouse.

I had heard that even before this incident that the Rooneys had sat Big Ben down for a talk about his general sense of entitlement and how he mistreated people/fans in person.
