Cameron Wake to Cowboys? Only at a very, very steep price

Cameron Wake is at practice today and not on the trade block, as far as we can know. (The Dolphins, you see, do not tell us).

But in the, ahem, wake of a report from Sirius NFL radio that the Dallas Cowboys have interest in trading for the Dolphins defensive end, this requires addressing:

Sources tell SiriusXM NFL Radio that the Cowboys have interest in Dolphins DE/LB Cam Wake...

Everyone is for sale.

Everyone is available for a price.

I am not saying the Dolphins are interested in trading Cameron Wake. Neither is Sirius, for that matter. And obviously we’ll know by the 4 p.m. trade deadline if this happens.

My guess is it will not.

Why?

One reason is because the Dolphins think they have a chance to turn this season into something meaningful. And trading Cameron Wake would lessen those possibilities. Reason two is because trading a player, particularly one as respected as Wake, sends a message to the entire team and, indeed, to fans.

NFL Trade Rumors: Cameron Wake To The Dallas Cowboys?
Posted by nickficorelli on Nov 1, 2016 13:16

With the NFL trade deadline fast approaching at 4 pm EST today, the rumor mill will be fast and furious for all teams. Typically, the deadline for football is stale and boring, as compared to all the other sports, but it seems that this season, something is different in the air, as there have been a few moves made, most notably the Patriots trade of Jamie Collins to the Browns. It also does not stop the speculation on moves that teams “should” make or rumors about possible trades.

One possible scenario now being thrown out on the wire is the Dallas Cowboys making a play for Cameron Wake of the Miami Dolphins, in which mid to low round draft picks would do the trick.

If the Dolphins do decide to make a deal, it would give them cap space and added draft picks to fill holes for the upcoming season and beyond. There is precedence in the Dolphins making such a deal for a popular and still productive player from their wants. They did trade Jason Taylor, who happens to be the only Dolphins player in history to have more sacks than Wake. It is not impossible to see this move being made.

For the Cowboys, it would give them a situational pass rusher that can still motor on the edges and create havoc within the pocket for opposing quarterbacks. The Cowboys’ pass-rushing issues for this season have been well-known. They did get DeMarcus Lawrence back, but they’re still working at a deficit in the pass rushing column. Although Wake is not the same player he was a few years ago, he still has it. He pressures the quarterback as a good rate, and the Cowboys may use Wake in an every down role instead of as a situational pass rusher.

It remains to be seen what happens here, but if the move is made, it will be a good move for both squads.

Start raiding Practice Squads. Stephen & Jason can be so pig headed sometimes. Team needs another pass rusher, LB and DB. May as well get guys who were productive in college instead of guys who did squat but have upside because of quick twitch. Quick twitch is not a great measure of heart or future production.

Pass Rusher: James Cowser
LB: Davis Tull
DB: Zack Sanchez

And re-sign DT Shaneil Jenkins already. Wilber, Rod Smith and Gachkar have overstayed their welcome too.

The deadline has passed. As everyone should have known, we weren't making a move.
