taking stock of tonight's game, its easy to remember the similar melee against the Giants last year...
...yes, the secondary was a sieve, but it was'nt done any favors with the 2 gaffes from Romo...spotting the Eagles 14 points is never a good thing when facing a Jim Johnson defense...hanging 41 on his unit is always a good thing...
Philadelphia has had one of the most consistent offenses over the past 5 years or so and Westbrook is a huge part of its success...they are a different team without him, as evidenced versus New York last year...
Dallas is lucky to have survived the short end of the turnover differential...the fumble by McNabb was the game changer...the defense came alive afterwards...
I think we are going to see Philadelphia return to force this year and should they stay healthy with McNabb and Westbrook, they'll be there at the end...last years helter-skelter season is the proof that this is a dangerous team down the stretch...
Judging by the bloggers here, i think some Dallas fans underestimate how good the Eagles can be when they are playing with purpose...those of us who remember the Dick Vermeil, Buddy Ryan, Richie Kotite and Ray Rhodes years can attest that the Eagles are always up for a Cowboys challenge, no matter their record or talent...these games always involve unpredictable theatrics and heartbreak...i'm glad that the 'Boys came out on top tonight...
...no rest for a wicked defense because it next faces a stable of excellent receivers in Green Bay...we all know what Rodgers is capable of...Dallas will need "a brand new bag" next week or else...
...i do agree that the secondary needs to step up but i'm sure Eagles fans are voicing a similar opinion about one of the best secondaries over the past 5 years...offenses with good pass protection present difficult challenges for defensive backs...without pressure, it's only a matter of time before quarterbacks like Romo and McNabb find and exploit "THE WEAKNESS" because there is one in every defensive alignment...the issue is time and recognition...remember back to the 1992 NFC Championship game...Dallas, even with the leagues #1 rated defense, at times just could'nt stop the San Francisco offense...controlling the clock with Emmitt and winning the turnover battle was truly what derailed one of the most prolific offenses of that decade...and two years later, Dallas ends up on the wrong end of the turnover differential and we all know what happened then...not beating yourself is half the battle...Romo would do well to remember this...
...tonight, both teams had problems with pass defense, one reason being conditioning...defenses are gassed pretty early at the beginning of the season, which is why we usually see more injuries in September than other months...i must say though, last years defensive performance versus New York foretold a collapse down the stretch and its hard not to succumb to a state of deja vu after tonight's game...i guess we'll see but the current coaching staff will not survive another December/playoff meltdown and i for one will welcome the purge if indeed it becomes necessary...
there was a point at which i posited that Dallas would'nt see a Superbowl under Bill Parcells...while i'm not there yet with Phillips, i'm much closer tonight even after the win against Philly...something is not right with this team and soon someone will have to answer to its tendency to underachieve at the most important moments of the season...this team has been good enough the past three years to win a playoff game but coaching "appears" to be the fly in the ointment...one way or another changes may be coming after this year...
...for now, the boys have some major business to attend to on the road next weekend...the Packers remember...ciao!
