Listening to the a guy on the radio in Dallas make some points earlier tonight...here's what he said...

4 of the top 5 Passing teams this past weekend....Lost. Bears being the only winner.

4 of the top 5 Rushing teams this past weekend....Won. Eagles the only loser.

He said that passing is sexy, but rushing gets you the win.

He mentioned a couple of other statistics...4 out of the top 5 blah, blah, blah....can't remember so if any of you heard it and remember please post it.

From what I can remember, in RECENT years, the passing is what has been getting teams through.

In fairness, 1 weekend is a small sample size. Any given week of games could sway one way or the other.

Running the ball has always been the key on offense. If you can run the ball, you can compete against anyone, at home or on the road. I've said it time after time but there's no excuse for this team not to be top 5 in the NFL in rushing. We have a big offensive line and 3 RBs with different styles that compliment each other. I enjoy watching Dez and Miles but if this team really wants to contend, they need to put their offense on the shoulders of their 3 RBs. Then it will open up the passing game and pass protection

I agree....

But we get what we deserve when we have a former QB being the OC.

You need to be able to run the ball in this league if you want to win. That doesn't mean you must run the ball over passing. You must run the ball enough. It's a passing league.

I agree with you, but this past weekend it wasn't.

I'm going to keep an eye on it just to see if this is the beginning of defenses changing....as everything is cyclical.

But the ration that WE had in such a close game was pretty unexcuseable.

That's a flawed stat because it confuses cause and effect. Teams have to pass the ball more BECAUSE they are losing. Teams run the ball more BECAUSE they are winning.

Running the ball more effectively has a very low correlation to winning in the NFL, but the team that passes the ball more effectively almost always wins. When that's not the case, it's often because of some fluke play, such as a defensive touchdown on the last play before halftime or a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Unless you are the Colts who pass regardless.

Also, you can see that the OC for the Texans didn't get away from the run game. As long as a team isn't stopping it, no reason to get away from it. A pass thrown in to keep the defense guessing is all that you need to do.

We were pretty close last year in Pass/Run attempts. We were 55% pass, 45% run the entire season. We were also 7th in the league in rushing, with 2103 yards and a 4.8 ypc average.

I just wonder hoe many of those rushes came after we had a lead and were running out the clock.

There are times when JG will stick with the Run....that one game against the Giants comes to mind....

But there are other times that make you wonder what the heck is going on....the Washington game where FJ never got a touch. Sorry, but he's one of the biggest weapons we have and there is NO defending that no matter who you are. I doubt that there is even ONE single other OC that would make a game long decision like that. I guess he likes to keep his weapons at his side....seems like he has his concealed carry permit to me.

But were the passing teams passing because they were behind? Were the running teams running because they were ahead and wanted to run the clock out? Whoever said that didn't put much thought into it.

Not sure....but I have the NFL Ticket and was flipping all over the place....the one thing that I did notice was Houston just keep ramming it down Indy's throat....the Titans also were running it quite a bit from the beginning....I think they said it was a "game-plan" or something like that and they stuck to it or something. :)

Of course they were running it .. they were in the lead as I said in my previous post. When teams have the lead, they run the ball more. When teams are behind they pass more. Therefore, after one week of games, teams who lost will typically have high passing yards and teams that won will typically have high rushing yards. The exceptions will be when the game is close all the way through the game until the very end.

Guess this guy didnt see this info:

From the 2009 SEASON stats.

Top Ten teams (in order) in terms of yds per game rushing: Jets, Titans, Panthers, Dolphins, Ravens, Saints, Cowboys, Browns, Bengals, Jaguars.

Half of these teams didnt make the playoffs. The Jets wouldnt have made the playoffs either had the last two teams they played made an effort to win and play their guys.

I understand that. But in watching TN more than the other games as I was switching around quite a bit, TN stuck with the run as they have all last year, but who can blame them? Nobody has stopped Chris Johnson in 12 straight games....plus, I don't think there is much trust in VY with them yet although he didn't throw but 4 incompletions on just 17 attemps.

Houston came out running and kept running.....they stuck with what is working....I admire those OC's.

It goes both ways for me...if the run is working, stick with it....if the pass is workin, stick with it.

I'm not just a guy that wants to run, run, run, or pass, pass, pass...but don't go screwing it up by getting away from something that has been working.

Yep...which is why I was saying that in my recent memory, Passing is what has gotten them there.

The Raiders actually ran the ball more effectively than the Titans -- 5.4 YPC to 5.3 YPC. The Titans won because they passed the ball MUCH better -- 7.4 AYPA to 2.5 AYPA.

It was the same last year -- the Titans started winning when they started passing the ball better than their opponents. In the Titans' last 17 games (all of last season plus this week's game), the team that averaged more yards per carry is 6-11, but the team that averaged more yards per pass is 16-1.

most of the top rushing teams from last year didn't make the playoffs. most of the top passing teams last year made the playoffs.
