Running back group could become a strength for this offense

Obviously Williams is the starter but they need someone who can make plays out of the backfield, a change of pace type….exactly what Blues upside is.

Davis ought to be fine as a backup to Williams, but they need that other weapon.

I’m not sure why they never wanted to replace Dunbar as a third down back, or Beasley as a slot guy. When Dak moved the chains efficiently, many third downs went to Beasley. That worked well for a dude named Brady with Edelman and the clones.

The running game was clearly better last year with JWill.

It was better, but by how much and what’s the root cause?

I’d argue that the addition of Pickens was more impactful than Williams. Among rbs with enough touches to qualify Williams faced the 2nd fewest number of defenders in the box on his carries. Only chase brown of the bengals faced lighter boxes….who also have two top end WRs.

Last year, skepticism was understandable. I'm a little surprised by the comments this year though. JWill and the OL proved they can be productive. Steele is a good run blocker. The shoulder injury shouldn't be a lingering concern for JWill unless there is something that isn't public knowledge. Davis showed that he could be effective.

The young guys (RB's & OL) have another year to grow. Sure, it's unproven but certainly very possible that they can at least be solid contributors.

I am expecting them to be a solid group until something gives me cause for concern.

I think they pretty well replaced Dunbar with Pollard, even though Pollard grew into a fairly complete RB.

Beasley was pretty unique, there aren't a lot of guys like him.

He looked pretty special last year. BIG upgrade from Dowdle.

We had Pickens last year. That would open up the run game for any RB.

Javonte Williams was an excellent value signing for the team last offseason. Team finally found a legitimate physical back that excels in those dirty yards. His play did suffer later in the season due to his workload.

We have heard good reports this spring on both Blue and Mafah. Blue is the homerun speed back that we haven't had since Pollard left for the Titans. Mafah projects as that ideal backup for Williams, tough/physical runner. Malik Davis is a veteran mixture of them both.

Opposing teams will look to limit the Cowboys passing attack, which will lead to light boxes for our run game to exploit. If our backs can bring solid production, it will allow the team to manage Williams workload.

He said he’s all fixed up and better than ever in his head.

There were reports that he looked pretty good in camp and was splitting reps with the 1s with Mafah. But they're just in shorts so...

IIRC Schotty said he seemed more mature and prepared this year than last year, even in shorts, which was really his biggest problem.

I'm excited to see Blue's progression but I actually want more for Mafah to be legit — as he, in my eyes, projects more toward an every down bell cow.

I like Williams a lot and I'd love for him to play out his whole contract at a high level but I could see him wearing down in the latter part of the season.

I think Blue is liked by many simply because he has a cool name lol.Also he played for texas and made a few plays there.
If his name was green or purple I dont think you guys would be talking about him.
Sometimes it is like people are desperate for him to do good ,but then he doesnt lol.

Blue I sort of give up on, bad rookie season says alot.

The defensive drop off was one obvious reason and that's been fixed. Not that it wasn't certain personnel too. Hopefully they've improved their too.

Dallas does not need a special RB. Consistency and good line play will get this team where it needs to be. Williams proved himself last year and I believe that he will be even better this year. The RB group should be adequate enough to balance the offense. Play calling and line play are the areas of my concern.

You don't get the production from your skill positions that you did last year if the line and play calling are bad.

Moore basically abandoned that style of offense. He was always looking to push the ball down the field in big chunks. On big play to cover for the multiple bad ones.

Beasley always looked like his spikes were longer than everyone else's.
