Running back question for all you Draft experts

Let's assume for a second that we don't draft a RB in Round 1.

And by Round 2, guys including C Johnson, R Rice, Stewart, Mendanhall, F Jones, and of course D Mac are already off the board.

In fact, I think this is a plausible scenario . . . .

With our pick in the 2nd round you've got a choice between M Hart, S Slayton, Choice, Forte, etc.

And assuming another player hasn't dropped (i.e., a top OL, WR, CB, for example), and value at RB with one of the guys I mentioned is equvalent to other positions, which of these RBs would you prefer?

Or do you prefer to wait until later in the draft because there isn't much difference between value in Round 2 and Round 3 for RBs, for instance?

I like Mike Hart. I don't think he gets enough love from the so called draft experts. The kid runs hard.

Slayton doesn't do anything for me, I don't know enough about Choice or Forte.

If reports are true it would seem the Cowboys staff has shown some interest in Choice.

I may hold off till the midrounds and go after that kid who's been impressing at the senior bowl, Justin Forsett.

That is exactly who I was going to mention. Charles.

I like Mike Hart...but honestly we have Barber. Hart is more of a power guy as well. You really want a guy whose a change of pace.

I don't know where anyone has the idea Chris Johnson is going in round one cause I haven't seen any evidence of that even remotely being the case.

Now, forgive me if I am wrong and those who mentioned it meant they thought he was going in round two before Dallas picks. That would be my fault for not realizing that then.

I actually think Dallas is going to wind up with Johnson. Even if they have to move up in the second round a few slots to get him. He's exactly what they're looking for in a back. Very fast, very quick, shifty, great hands. He'd be the perfect compliment to Barber.

2008 Offseason Wishlist

1.Resign Flo(if reasonable), Hamlin
2.byebye Julius, Reeves
3.Sign Drayton Florence
4.Draft
1a.Tracy Porter CB-Indiana
1b.Chris Johnson RB-East Carolina
2. Donnie Avery WR-Houston
3.Barry Richardson -T Clemson
4. Spencer Larsen ILB Arizona
5.Paul Smith QB Tulsa
6.Ahtyba Rubin DT Iowa St.
7.Thomas Brown RB Georgia

I would prefer some slight variation

I like keeping Flo and Hamlin
I like getting rid of Reeves and the Jones'
I like signing a CB....but I want Randall Gay
I want to sign LB Karlos Dansby (unless he gets franchised)

Trade our #28 down into the 2nd and pick up a 4th

Draft
1 - CB Antione Cason - Arizona
2 - RB Chris Johnson - ECU
2 - LB Jonathan Goff - Vanderbilt
3 - WR Donnie Avery - Houston
4 - FB Owen Schmitt - WVU
4 - CB Charles Godfrey - Iowa
5 - C Doug Legursky - We Are Marshall
6 - RB Anthony Alridge - Houston
7 - QB Paul Smith - Tulsa

Slayton's dropping like a ton of bricks!

Did something specific happen (other than being in a very deep draft for rbs) that made him go from one of the top backs in the nation to a value pick?

Nope - just a deep running back draft class

Slaton is a Tony Dorsett like burner and running style.

slaton is nowhere near the class of tony dorsett......tony d was better in his sleep......

also, that WVU backup was way better IMO, than slaton.

I'm with you....Choice would also be a good option, except that he just seems to be a lighter version of MBIII and frankly I don't think that helps much.

Exactly, I see Choice as a less powerful Barber and that's not what we need. If we didn't have MBIII then I'd be 100% fine with a back like Choice, but I think we need a shiftier back who can also catch and I think Forsett fits that bill. If we can get him in the 4th round or so then we'd be in great shape.

I like Cory Boyd in the fourth or fifth round. Tough runner, great hands, decent in pass protection. Underrated. Had some character concerns early in his college career, but he has really matured and he has it together now.

I don't know much about him, but he has put up some decent numbers, especially as a receiver out of the back field. I read that he was suspended for non-academic reasons. That's a bit troubling. On a side note, wasn't he a teammate of Demetrius Summers, the kid we took a flyer on last year? He too was suspended from the Gamecocks, I believe....

I'm not sure I'd be willing to spend a draft pick on this kid. Maybe bring him in as an udfa though.

I think the combination of talent at RB this year, Slaton's injury at the Sugar Bowl and the fact that he was pretty much injured all season combine for his current situation. Having said that, this guy is a man IMO. He rushed for over 1700 yards in his Soph. year. He's rushed for over a 1000 yards in all three years at WV. I really like Slaton.

Noel Devine is a very good talent himself. I don't know that he will end up being better then Slaton but it is possible. He's only a Freshman this past season so he's got some time left. However, saying that Devine is better may not be such a slap to the face as you might think. Noel Devine played at North Fort in Fort Myers Florida (same place Deion, Jevon Kearse and Warren Williams played. Also Mike Greenwell MLB) where he rushed for over 7000 yards and 92 TDs. Devine was prolific as a HS RB. I don't know that he will be better then Slaton but if he is, I don't know that it would be and indicator of how good or bad Slaton might be. Devine is a heck of a talent.
