I am personally pretty disappointed in the Cowboys running game. I do realize that we played two very good run defense teams but I am not seeing what I want from our running game. I have two theories as to why this is the case.
First of all, it looks like Julius is running a bit hesitant. The O-line isn't giving him much to work with, but it also lookes like Julius is holding himself back a little bit. This is something that if he is smart, he will work through it. What it appears he is doing is trying to let his blocks do all the work as opposed to last year where he at times didn't let his blockers do enough. He needs to find a balance and know when to wait on his blockers, and when to abandon the blocks and burst into his own holes.
Secondly, and more importantly, I think our O-line has a problem with run blocking. Petitti is impressing me, and we have 3 Pro-Bowlers on the line so we are capable of doing more than we are currently doing. What I see on many of the running plays is a coordination problem among the entire line. By this I mean that the line is not working together as a unit. This problem I credit to our O-line coach. I hope this is a problem that is corrected, maybe through adjustments during the week, maybe through experience with each other. Whatever the case, if we want to run the ball better, our O-line is going to have to work together better.
