I got into a powerlifting regimen for a couple years and while I gained a lot of muscle just way too much mass. Im 5-10 and I was up to 235. Now I am at 214. I wanna get to around 200 which is gonna be hard. My diet has been very restricted. I was always the basketball athletic type and thats what Im getting back into approaching 40 in january. The mass weight is getting old.

I only wish; I had my thyroid go out of wack the last two years and went to 260. I am not even as tall as you lucky for me I spread the weight over so I do not look as bad as I could but I still hate looking at the pictures from the last two years. I got a long hard road to get back to the 170-180 range I want to achieve. That is my two year goal to get that low. Right now I am shooting for 210 by the end of December.

I run 10k every 2nd day and do fartlek training along with light weights the days between (hehe i said "fart"). I run on trails because of the softer impact on the joints and swear by NB's "Minimus" line of trail runners. They're really light but as long as you're not running over gravel or lava your feet won't hurt because of the thin outsole.
Thats fantastic. Same run everytime?

I usually do cardio 3-4 days a week. On a good day I'll run four miles in 28-30 minutes followed by 15 minutes of moderate intensity on the elliptical, usually closing out with 15 minutes or so of situps, pushups and squats.

I'll usually lift 2-3 days a week but try and always do more cardio every week because I always feel better after a cardio workout. Nothing beats the runner's high.

It isn't that big of a deal when you've been running consistently for nearly 15 years. I know several people who can run 5+ miles at a 6-7 minute pace and I just haven't ever really pushed myself to get to that level without getting sick. For me, my body really starts to weaken after four miles at that pace. I can do 7-8 miles at a slower pace but even though it burns more calories I don't feel nearly as good afterward. Some people like long, sustained runs but I enjoy knocking out several miles quickly to really get my heart rate up.

Anybody in decent shape could get themselves to a 7-8 minute miles pace in a couple months with consistent training. People who have never run 3-4+ miles at a time often see it as some unattainable goal, but it really isn't that difficult if you apply yourself to a goal and have the joints to handle running regularly.

I definitely agree with that last statement. In actuality there isn't much that is unattainable if you're willing to work real hard.

Running has always been difficult for me I'm not sure why. I just never had the mental toughness for it. About 8-9 months ago I started running though. I ran 3 miles straight for the first time without stopping which was a pretty big deal to me. I was finally starting to make progress but because I had put on so much weight(regular weight was like 190 and I was 220) and was wearing poor shoes--at least I think this is why--I developed plantar fasciitis. That slowed me down a lot and I eventually stopped running.

I just started running again about 2 weeks ago. 1st week I ran two miles in about 26 minutes. Last week 23 minutes. I'm hoping within a month or so I can get down to a 7-8 minute mile and run 2-3 miles 3 times a week. I'm like you though, I want to run it as fast as possible and get it over. I just don't want my body to start losing muscle.

That's pretty awesome that you've been doing it for so long though. Do you ever do sprints?? I hear they are good for developing leg muscles and you still keep all of your muscle.

I do intervals sometimes when I don't feel like running several miles. I'll sprint a lap, walk a half lap, sprint a lap, etc. My heart rate recovers pretty quickly though, a lot of people do one lap running, one lap walking.

The key is to make sure you do your running lap as quickly as possible.

I was always in athletics growing up and I just kept working out once I got out of school. I've never really known anything else, so it really isnt a big deal to me. IMO, the hardest part about working out for people is starting. Once you get into the habit it's easy because you see so many benefits, but that first few weeks and months are hard for people. I was lucky in that I just happened to pick up good habits early.

I can honestly only run with a good playlist:( Long distance is waaaay too boring for me. Also I've been starting to run outside more as opposed to using the treadmill. Two me, they are two completely different beasts all together.

That is impressive. I am at about 8-9 a mile for 4-6 miles. I jog slow though. I always run outside as the treadmill is nothing like outside. Its not even comparible. Today is gonna be a challenge its 85 already at 9.30 am. I may just do 3 miles at a high school track. lol.

Pretty much. It never gets boring because of the scenery. I'm lucky enough to live near water with trails running along its banks. I run early in the morning when the sun is just starting to come up and the water is just starting to evaporate off the surface and off the ground. Some days the mist gets fairly thick and combined with the wet ground it dampens a lot of ambient noise so it feels like time has stopped and I'm the only thing moving around on the planet. I start walking for a bit to absorb that kind of surreal and peaceful feeling, and then I start my Godsmack/Wolfmother/Nine Inch Nails MP3 player playlist and the illusion goes bye-bye and its down to business lol. Highly recommend early morning running because of the atmosphere - misty or sunny, plus it kick-starts your metabolism for the day.

I hate running long distances so I just run hills at the park after P90x workouts.

Music gets me through the runs. :D

Well, shouldn't say hate, just prefer running hills, I guess.

Holy moly! I am in the worst cardiovascular shape that I can remember.

I used to only run and not lift and my cardio was above average. Nothing special, but I could run.

Over the course of the last two years or so I switched from all cardio to all lifting. I gained much more muscle, however, it came at the expense of also picking up some extra lbs.

I've changed my diet almost entirely over the course of the last 9 weeks or so and the results have been great. In an attempt to lose the extra weight around my midsection I thought I'd get right back Into the swing of things with my old cardio routine, boy was I wrong.

I definitely have my work cut out for me. It's quite embarrassing how far I've fallen from a cardio standpoint! At least my weight is down, lol.
