Runningback we Need !!

I'll pass. Drew Boylhart (thehuddlereport.com) said that he's watched film on the guy and he's overrated. He's slow to the LOS, so he'll only be effective in an offense that features a FB. He won't be able to run from a spread formation. This will seriously limit his time on the field. He'll basically be a 1-dimensional RB.

The success of Adrian Peterson is going to have a lot of teams reaching too high on running backs in the draft this year. So many other positions that are much harder to fill IMO.

Kevin Smith quietly gains his yards consistently. I saw him play ECU this year and was surprised by how many yards he ended up with. Granted, he picked up some good yardage and he is a good back, but I don't see him as a home run hitter. I just never had that "this guy is killing us" feeling. Maybe that makes him a system back or more than likely me a bad judge of talent.

Either way, I'd take my shot on Slaton, Felix Jones or Chris Johnson.

MB3 will get us our consistent yards, we need that homerun threat and return specialist.

He's way too slow and looks like he's running in jelly when he's in and out of his cuts. Most of the tackles he runs out of in that video of yours are arm tackles, just simply awful form.

Emmitt was way too slow. Emmitt wasn't a homerun hitter. Yet Emmitt sure did hit a lot of homeruns. Emmitt also wore defenses down with 25 carries a game.

Did you not watch any of Kevin Smith's games? He is a very good back. He is elusive, has great vision, uses cutbacks with great efficiency, displays power when needed, and he can go the distance from time to time. He is workhorse that can simply wear down the defense. I watched him use and abuse the Longhorns defense. He really impressed me that game. He also destroyed a few other defenses late in the season that I saw.

Whoever drafts him will be very pleased with his performance.

We need to draft his O line. He had some HUGE holes to run through!

Thanks, that was a great read............ That guy was dead on with his pre-draft MBIII break down wow.

That's why www.thehuddlereport.com is the best pay draft site value on the net.

I agree, and it's relatively inexpensive. Last years cost was ~$12/year. Can't beat that.

I don't really prefer Mendenhall because we have a pounder alreay in Marion, who can slide down the LOS, unlike Mendenhall, what we need is a change-of-pace back, one who can strike from anywhere on the field to complement him, the only backs really in that class are McFadden, Stewart, Felix Jones and Chris Johnson, and then you have the 2nd and 3rd-tier backs in that mold, such as Dontrell Savage, Anthony Aldridge etc.

Stewart would be a great fit here because Marion would still remain as the closer, the one who will get the tough yards, that Stewart may not be able to, but I think he comes off the board before 22 anyways

Then he'd actually fit into the offense. One of the problems with Julius is that he's best off in a zone blocking scheme with no fullback. Dallas uses man-to-man and rarely goes to zone blocking because they are just too big.

While I'd love to have another Maurice Jones-Drew or Brian Westbrook, Dallas couldn't go wrong with another Marion Barber. Whatever the player may be, they need for somebody that is decent in short yardage and can run in man-to-man blocking schemes. We didn't have that with Julius and it seriously handcuffed the offense at times.

Exactly right, Biggems... I watch that clip, and I see a good cutback runner, running from the I position... he sees his holes, sets up his blocks, has a nose for the end zone...

He's not physically similar to Emmitt, he's much taller, but watching that clip brought me flashbacks to Emmitt running behind Newton and Allen and Stepnoski and Tuinei and Williams...

Yes, he's just an I back; yes, he needs a fullback to be most effective... so draft him, go the I formation as your base, and get yourself a stud fullback (Owen Schmitt would be nice, thank you)...

Hey, if there's one thing Hudson Houck ought to be able to teach, it's how to block for a cutback runner out of the I formation... he's had some experience in that area... LOL...

I miss the lead draw, let's bring it back...

Color me unimpressed...at least by that video. Anybody who gets 41 carries a game is bound to be close to Sanders' record. He just didn't look that special to me. (However, it was one game and I only saw one other, so I could be wrong.)

late 2nd or 3rd round back. very solid, nothing special, kinda a rudie johnson, or a thomas jones. kevin does have one thing on this side and thats his vision but i see him get ankle tackled too much, and he dances too much before the line of scrimmage for my tastes for a back who has average lateral speed. he got away with it in college but i dont think he will be as successful with it in the pros.

I actually think we need to draft 2 RBs. The earlier pick teams with Barber and the later pick replaces TT both as our #3 RB and also our return man. Whoever the 2nd pick is I want him to have potential to start if Barber or the other RB we draft gets hurt. Needless to say we need a RB who can pick up the blitz/block and catch the ball.

Great post.

The only thing I would add is it doesn't matter to me if we draft those 2 RB's or we sign a FA and draft one. I would hate to completley reliant on a rookie should Marion miss some time.

From the clip, Smith is a solid back who gets a bit more than the blocking provides. What I didn't like too much was a lack of burst once he cleared the first level of the defense.

Smith hits top speed very quickly, but top speed does not seem to be that high.

If we do draft a RB, he has to be a guy who can do the one thing Barber can't- run away from the D.
