Russ Lande from the Sporting News when asked about this year prospects who could be a risky pick had this to say about Amukarma: "Most games, he was outstanding. But in the two games against two elite receivers, they just abused him."

Said this about Nate Solder another one he viewed as a risky pick "he reminds me of a great athlete who's raw and technically terrible that he gets beaten."

No he is not, he is for real. I do not know what this guy is talking about. I'm a Husker fan and I have not missed a Husker or Irish game in years. I have been a fan of those two teams since I was 12, and I have been a Cowboys fan since I was a Toddler. I'm 46yrs old.

Blackmon from OSU had a very good game against the huskers, the majority of that was in the first half, he caught passes on the whole secondary and LBs.
Now in the second half, Prince was assigned to him exclusively and Blackmon did not have as good a second half.

The other receiver this guy mentioned, is a mystery, to me, like I said I watch every game

if we get a corner i hope jerry gets some brass n trades up to get PP

You're implying here that Jerry Jones doesn't have brass already. Is that what you meant?

:hammer: on both of guys.

That's been my main problem with Prince all along. My Huskers didn't play many passing teams this past season and the ones they did, Prince wasn't " dominant " and I'm being generous.

Have to admit that Prince worries me at 9.

Let me reiterate....WITHOUT a DOMINANT front 7, great CB isn't going to help us.

Games are won in the trenches!

I still think our CBs are serviceable, given a good DLine. If we do take Prince, I'm starting to like the idea of moving him to FS.

Amukamara was assigned to Blackmon from the start of the game. Nebraska ended up winning this shoot out but Amukamara did not win anything against Blackmon.

Here's about 4 or 5 very important plays verse 1 another throughout the game and after watching this I have no confidence that picking a guy like Amukamara with a 9th overall pick would give us a truly viable #1 CB to cover half of the NFL teams # 1 WR's.

With a 9th overall pick you should get a bonafide cover man. I'm convinced that any of our starting 3 WR's would make him just as dizzy as Blackmon did in this video. At least that dizzy.

Eaxactly! Unless it's 1 of these 3 for me at # 9, I would trade down.

Peterson
Fairley
Dareus

I've said multiple times - if anyone believes underthrown passes and a flea flicker qualify as 'getting abused', then you have no business scouting anyone, even for fun.

There are some things you can attack Prince for (i.e., lack of INTs, run support) - but that OSU game is just ridiculous to criticize him for.

On another note - what is the other game in which Landee is trying to refer to?

Prince is a good player no doubt but he got abused by Blackmon period. You could see it in Prince's body language everytime Blackmon caught a ball on him. He was frustrated. Of course in Prince's defense, a ton of Weedon to Blackmon connections (over the course of the year) were made because Weedon would underthrow the ball or something and Blackmon made such incredible body adjustments that, at the last second, are nearly indefensible. Randy Moss used to do this, he'd save a step and keep his hands in until the last possible second then snatch the ball and not even give a defender the chance to make a play on the ball. That's why Culpepper made a probowl. Blackmon does similar things when the ball is in the air.
But to think Prince is going to come in and be a lock-down kinda guy is setting up yourself up for major disappointment. He'll probably be a solid cover guy but I don't foresee a ton of picks or a perennial probowler, which is what you'd like with a top ten DB. As far as value goes, if we plan to get a CB early, I'd prefer to trade down and take Harris or Williams...comparable players at a much cheaper price plus an extra pick.

Using Mike Mayock's analysis on nfl.com from 3 days ago are you? :laugh2:

That pass interference on Amukamara, Blackmon just ran by him. You don't bring that up do you? Would have been a 50-60 yard TD.

The flea flicker trick play, Amukamara was running with blakcmon then got taken off on during that wheel route. Amukamara gets into position once the ball is caught 55 yards after that and totally whiffs on the tackle, lets Blackmon run another 30 yards into the endzone. 85 yard flea flicker TD. You bring that up as not being abused.

Blackmon was isolating him on a block that gained 10 yrd run for a first down on another play on this footage. You don't bring that up.

Blackmon toasts Amakumara after a horrible play action by the QB for another monster. You don't bring that up

Blackmon gains 17 yards on a 10 yard first down come back/inside curl route. You don't bring that up.

Does it again but OSU gets a holding, so I give Amakumara the pass on that one.

Please, it was more than catches on a trick play and jump ball on an underthrown ball all game.

Amukamara was abused and frustrated. Any 3 of our starting WR's would make him just as dizzy, if not more. So would a lot more #1 WR's in this league.

If OSU had a better QB it would have been even uglier for Amukamara.

Good try with the Mayock analysis where he leaves out 3-4 other scenarios.

This guy is not a top 10 pick.

Maybe Quinn, I wouldn't touch Smith unless it's near the bottom of the first.

Quinn is a super talent that I do like also and is worthy of a top 10 pick but we have far more pressing needs than at OLB.

I'm not an advocate of benching another first round pick in Spencer who is a year removed from real outstanding play.

Plus Quinn has not played all season and only has experience as a 4-3 DE.

Meaning he would be a 3-4 tweener and would need to learn a new position for a solid season, just as Spencer did. No discounting his level of talent though.

Tyron Smith naturally walks around at 285 lbs and now is said to be at 307 lbs which is still consider on the light side but passable as an NFL OL.

Houck does not usually utilize this type of linemen so I'm surprised to hear that our interest is what it is. I think it's more draft fodder than anything.

Furthermore, Smith did nothing anywhere notable enough in his college body of work at USC playing right tackle that would suggest he is a top 10 talent.

I think him being mentioned as a mid first round pick is as far as it goes at this point and I think it's better to even have him closer to the end of the first. These guys on here don't sit it this way and that's fine.

Gaining weight any way you put it on usually is not any help to your knees and this guy is 2 months removed from knee surgery and probably still needs to put on a bit more than 307. Not a good thing and definitely not worth the 9th overall pick just on that alone.

1 guy was smart enough to lose 10 lbs after playing a year off of knee surgery and that was the rb Ingram.

I rather put the pick to use on an OL that is worthy of a later first pick and can move from left to right tackle with no weight and/or injury concerns if tackle is the route we want to go.

Absolutely no tackle is worth a top 10 pick in this draft. None.

So:

Peterson
Fairley
Dareus

Quinn is worthy, especially as a 4-3 DE, but not a need as much as other positions.

agree but i would add JJ Watt to the list im buying now he's a freak.

Few things ..

If you think this is the first time I have been this adamant about how much of garbage it is to bring up Blackmon vs Amukamara as a knock on Prince, then you haven't been paying attention. Since the day it happened I have been steady on what I've said.

But if you want to make silly comments to try to prove your point, go ahead.

Further if you want to count me as listening to any draft analyst, Mayock would be dead last on my list. After the garbage he spewed last year that made the rounds last year on Husker boards when he fully believe McCoy was not only a better pass rusher than Suh, no matter that Suh absolutely decimated McCoy statistically. He furthered it by thinking McCoy was actually better than Suh. After hearing that mess for months, I've been done listening to Mayock.

Back on point - I have watched that game probably 5 times in full. For different reasons, but Taylor Martinez's performance was remarkable, and I loved Eric Martin's hit from that game. But I doubt you remember either of those, since you likely only saw Youtube clips or a box score from that game. :laugh2:

Your breakdown of the plays ..

On the PI - stop listening to the notorious Ed Cunningham about Amukamara. Yes, Prince interfered, but Prince was not 'beat' on that play. Half-step behind with the ability to get a hand over the shoulder for a CB is not 'beat'. Good throw to the pylon over the shoulder by Weeden would make it a tough play by any CB. But if Weeden puts that ball anywhere else Prince is in position to make a play.

On the flea flicker - again, I doubt you remember how Kendall Hunter was absolutely pimp slapping Nebraska's run defense in that 1st half, and how he ended up with 200+ yards on the ground that day and 146 in the 1st half. If you watch, Nebraska's safeties and all 3 CBs bit on that play, and rightfully so thanks to OSU mauling us up front. The flea-flicker working the way it did was more a result of OSU running wild to setup that pass, more than anything else. That isn't a matter of Prince getting beat, but Nebraska trying to overcompensate for OSU's run game killing them.

You isolate one run block play. Even I said Prince struggles in run defense, but isolating that play out of a video when how many other run plays happened in that game is complete weak sauce to try to bolster your point.

'Toasts' him again on what playaction for a huge gain?

Blackmon only caught 5 passes in the game, bruh. Underthrown pass, the comeback, and the flea-flicker. Blackmon's other 2 catches in the game came in the 2nd half and if you want to get technical about what they were ..

Blackmon on Eric Hagg in the slot. Very short crossing route for about only a 2 yard gain.

Blackmon on Eric Hagg inside again. Runs a bit of a wheel route and catches a 25 yard TD during garbage time late in the game.

Blackmon's 2nd half stats - 2 catches 27 yards.

Blackmon's 2nd half stats on Amukamara - 0 catches, 0 yards

Again, a trick play, an underthrown pass (which Amukamara had position on) and a comeback route that Prince was beat cleanly on. But that = abused. :laugh2:

But like I said, watching only a Youtube video gives you a pretty jaded view, eh?

If you want the full video in 720p (because I'm cool like that), then let me know. Would be glad to hook you up with a copy so you can actually WATCH the game.

I didn't get the McCoy over Suh last year either. What I really didn't get was that the Cowboys were reported having McCoy over Suh also. Closest guy to Reggie White I've seen come out.

Said this about Nate Solder another one he viewed as a risky pick "he reminds me of a great athlete who's raw and technically terrible that he gets beaten."

Russ is interesting because he's different. He doesn't think Patrick Peterson is a high first rounder; he rates him about 21st on his top 99. To quote:

I have a bad feeling that Peterson is always going to struggle with consistency in pass coverage and will end up being a backup cornerback who makes his biggest contribution as a returner. Despite my concern about if he will ever develop, he does have elite physical talent which is why he is worth taking a gamble on in the second round...

The year Kris Jenkins came out, Russ thought he was at best a 7th rounder because he "didn't have the mental capacity for the game". I think Kris's Wonderlic was in the Troy Aikman range. Russ thought LaDanian Tomlinson had bad hands, couldn't catch and couldn't run inside.

Russ often has interesting, eye catching opinions that are, in a word, unfounded.
