That is a tough one. I have not heard of any attitude issues with Russell and that gives him an edge over Leaf. I never thought Russell should be the #1 pick, but it is really hard to judge a player for the Raiders. That organization and especially the offense is a mess. I don't think he would be a star on any team, but even a great QB would struggle out in the black hole.

How bad is Derek Anderson? His stats are even worse than Russell's.

How bad is Brady Quinn? He can't even beat out Anderson?

Have to disagree about the attitude thing with Russell.

He might not have the meltdowns that Leaf did, but he shows up out of shape and overweight. Furthermore, he puts in a 9-5 type day, doesn't stay late to watch film or work with his receivers. He seems happy to get his money and do the minimun required of him.

That, IMO, is a major attitude problem.

Russell is a great arguement for a rookie salary cap. He got his $30 million and obviously is phoning it in.

As for the mess in Cleveland, I think manginius is mostly responsible there.

Russell is just collecting a paycheck...

It has been said that he doesnt come in camp in great shape and isnt a great student of the game.

Plus....he cant hit a barn door. :)

What a way to make a living....have a few great years in college as a Qb...get drafted high...paid millions....set for life and IMHO Russell isnt even backup material in the NFL.

Picking McFadden (sp?) and Russell are one of the biggest blunders in recent drafts.

I heard those things about Leaf. He would not work out or watch tape. They are even except Leaf was a jerk to everyone.

Very similar guys. Tall, strong, big arms, not really runners, but can move okay and just lousy QBs.

One of the things Parcells looks for in a QB is a 4 year starter. Those are real hard to find nowadays. If memory serves me right, wasn't Jamarcus Russell a one year wonder at LSU? What about Leaf? Was he a one-year wonder also?

50% bust rate with 1st rd picks.

The Raiders have picked horrrible the last few years: OL Gallery, QB Russell, RB McFadden and WR Heyward-Bey have all been big, expensive busts. Top picks and nothing to show for it.

I guess he was asked about it yesterday and he said something about one guy not being the right thing on one play and someone else doing the same on another play.

Basically just deflected and said:

"I don't think its me. Do you think its me"

I never really thought Russell was a QB so much as a big arm, and every now and again even in his disastrous season the only time he does anything at all is usually a breakout play. (Believe or not it's actually happened a few times)
He is not an NFL caliber QB.

The Browns are actually doing the worst thing an NFL team could ever do by not starting Quinn. If Quinn takes 70% of the snaps this season he makes an extra 11 million in both '10 and '11. That's why he's not starting. I'm sorry but to date Brady Quinn has just not played enough to call him a bust. He wasn't even playing that awful when he got pulled, that team just sucks ***. But again he's not playing because the browns want to save the cash.

Gallery has actually turned into a pretty damn solid guard, and I think McFadden will pan out too...but for his sake probably on another team.

There was an anecdote I ran across a few years ago regarding Leaf. Indianapolis did in-depth research on both he and Peyton which included sending team representatives to both QB's high schools to talk to their coaches.

Indianapolis's rep supposedly saw that the high school didn't have a single one of Leaf's trophies in their display case. That pretty much let them know what kind of "character" Leaf had.

When ESPN ran their special on him two or three years ago showing him coaching at West Texas A&M I was kind of glad for the guy. Crappy apartment, making a living on football, but seemed to have his head on straight. It made you wonder if he had grown up a few years earlier he might have had a good enough career at San Diego rather than being labelled the biggest bust in NFL history.

Then he gets busted for breaking into a player's dorm or apartment to steal pain killers. Nope, nothing's changed.

he said yesterday he doesn't think he's one of the things wrong with the team.

I was talking to an LSU fan in the office the other day and he said that Russel was good in college, kind of a man among men because of his size.

Like in many cases a team falls in love with the physical attributes of a player and overlooks whether they can really play football and if they have the desire or ability to get better.

The biggest problem the Raiders have in their drafts is that they put measurables above everything else.

Character, work ethis, football ability etc are not huge concerns to them, Speed, size, strength, etc are what they look for.

This is how you end up with a roster full of tremendous athletes who can't play football.

Sad thing is, probably doesn't think he's the problem. He's a disgrace to the game. For his sake, his monetary decisions had better be significantly better than his football decisions. If not, he'll burn through that money in no time and be out of a job to boot.

Russell isn't Ryan Leaf or Cade McNown bad but he is Akili Smith or Andre Ware bad.

Is J. Russel looking like a worse pick than Ryan Leaf?

At this point, I don't think there is any question. Leaf had maturity issues when he came out, as I recall, but he had as much talent as anybody who ever played the position when he was drafted. His problem was an injury that pretty much ended his career.

Russel, well, he looks as if he may never be able to play the position at this point.

JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young, Michael Vick; the scramble first quarterback with a canon arm but no intelligence or discipline has got to stop burning teams at some juncture.

JaMarcus Russell is not a scramble first QB. He wasn't in college is isn't now. He finished his three years at LSU with 79 rushing yards. He had negative rushing yards his first two seasons and 142 rushing yards his last season in college. In college I thought he played a lot like Ben Roethlisberger. They both scrambled to buy time and then chunk it down field with their big arms, but rarely run down field. Big Ben has been able to do that successfully at the NFL while JaMarcus has not.
