Kyle Kosier - G - Cowboys The Cowboys reportedly began extension talks with LG Kyle Kosier before the recent lockout.
The 32-year-old is set to hit the open market this offseason, and the Cowboys have no replacement ready to step in. While he's still playing at a high level, his three separate lower leg injuries last season have to give Dallas pause on guaranteed money.

Kosier was one of our best free agent signings in recent history.

I figured we would continue to talk to him about an extension.

Where should we overpay, then?

Exactly... any OL on this team we contact about an extension has instant leverage.

why because you dont feel there is a suitable replacement?

I like Kosier but I dont feel we should over spend for his services.....he is coming off a year with lower leg injuries and no one knows if he is on the decline

Spears, Kozier, Sensabaugh....you have to be selective here. Anyone coming in will be asking for just the same type of contract. But on the offensive line, both Leonard Davis and Marc Colombo look like their replacements should already be on the team...yet aren't yet proven. So losing Kozier would ONLY put the need of two starting guards up to the top of this year's draft.

You want that before a right tackle?

Im a Kosier fan, if hes reasonable, lock him up for 2 more years with an option.

Out of those three, Kosier is the only one that you can probably keep and not overspend for production.

I think Sensabaugh's fate rests on whether or not we can get Michael Huff, or another free agent safety if/when the CBA is worked out.

We need playmakers!!!!11!!

Hopefully Ryan fixes that. It would be nice to see our db's actually looking for the ball for a change.

Yes, he had injuries, but so did Columbo and Romo and Dez and Felix and Barber and Newman.......

IT's Football, they happen. Now he's a bit older and getting a few more.

BUT,

Kosier is a SMART player on what last year was an incredibly STUPID team. If they don't give him guaranteed money then he is an above average player when in the line-up (he makes far less blatant mistakes than Davis). Plus if he keeps taking snaps at Center, he can be our backup there. Even if we draft a guard Center, I would keep Kosier for another year or two. We need his smarts, consistency, and versatility.

I'd rather keep him over Davis and/or Columbo at this point, injury history or no. Davis is underperforming for the money, although I think, if motivated he could rebound. Columbo, I love his attitude, but he couldn't physically do it anymore last year, and was a big liability at times.

Bad move if they let him go over others.

Totally agree.

I think both he and the Cowboys realize where he is in his career and what he brings to the table.

And he knows he's closer to the end of his career rather than the beginning. He's been in Dallas for a while, and all things considered, he may not want to uproot and start over elsewhere.

I would certainly prefer re-signing him over keeping Davis or Colombo, and letting Kosier go only opens up more uncertainty on the offensive line, an area with enough question marks already.

if we could get Kosier on another 5 year 15 mill deal, it would be good for us -- of course, that would really be a 2 or 3 year deal, but he's been good for us - folks say he's always injured but, save for the year he tried to play on a broken foot, he's been able to come back pretty quickly -- 3 of his 5 years here he played every game ... and he only missed 3 games last year .. pretty much just 2008 when he had problems

That is just a great post. Completely agree.

I agree with most here in thinking we need to bring Kosier back. When healthy, he's the least of our concerns on the line.

Kosier regressed significantly last year in run blocking according to Pro Football Focus. He got hurt again. When he gets hurt, Romo gets killed. Montrae Holland should have had his head on a swivel and attempted to pick up that linebacker. I think Kosier's instincts do that. Kosier will be 33 next November. His best days are behind him. He was never a dominant player to begin with and his play will only get worse. According to Wes Bunting, whose work I respect, an offensive lineman's best years end after 31 (his opinion).

I think this is a big mistake, and I wanted Colombo out of Dallas after that 2009 divisional round debacle. I wasn't very happy when Dallas decided not to turn in the card with Phil Loadholt's name on it (see the 2009 draft). Colombo was never a good enough player to turn down a great value like Loadholt deep into round 2. We all have seen how that terrible organizational decision has worked out.

You don't resign soon to be 33 year old offensive linemen (who were never dominate players), especially when they come off a big drop off in play.

You could replace Kosier with a 2nd or 3rd round pick (possible 2nd round grade) and not miss a beat.

You can argue letting Davis go, but he is more durable. Plus, a player like Tyron Smith could possibly help Davis play a little better.

Man, I miss Larry Allen.

According to Pro Football Focus, Leonard Davis graded out higher than Kyle Kosier last year. Kosier's and Davis' overall grade had really big drop offs. Again, both running game grades dropped off the table.

Kosier's run blocking grade was very poor or bad; he had a negative rating. Davis had positive grades in run blocking and pass blocking. Kosier was the better pass blocker, however, Davis passed that area and was rated higher as a run blocker. Davis graded out better in the screen game, too.

Davis graded out as an average player according to Pro Football Focus.

I heard Mike Lombardi call Leonard Davis an "average starter" very recently.

Again, for the record. I object. :)
