Rob Ryan's career record in the 4th quarter with the lead or tied is 27-28. Yes, I know he had bad teams, Oakland and Cleveland so lets look at this year.
This year Ryan's defense is 7-5 when we have the lead or are tied. Thats 5 of the 6 loses the Cowboys have had this year where we have had the lead or were tied and the defense couldn't hold.

None of Rob Ryan's stats are impressive. Defense rank. Wins/Losses. Performance late in the season. No matter what stats you look at, they are not good.

That's indicative of the players he's had I think...He's a great coordinator IF he has all the right players. He's a very all or nothing type of guy, so that's why his stats are very average.

That's true of every coordinator, though. The really good ones find ways to get it done. We're still blowing a lot of coverages that we shouldn't be blowing at this point, which is a pretty damning criticism of Ryan's work so far this season.

Right. My point was that he's an average coordinator, but would be tremendous with great players.

Thats sounds a lot more "duh" than I mean it :laugh2:

Why do the Cowboys just hire "names" without really doing any research?

do you really think thats true?

Don't know, seems that way sometimes.

Seems like he just got this job because he Buddy's son and Rex's brother, other than that what's he done to deserve the job?

I'm finding myself fixating on the comments from our secondary about the communications problems tonight. I want to believe that that's the heart of the issue, and that it's fixable. I just don't know that I do.

If we're able to play better coverage across the board, this team is capable of actually being pretty good. If we're able to play like we did earlier in the season on defense, with Austin, Robinson, and Fiametta all on offense, we should be playing with leads in most games, which snowballs and makes the whole team look a lot better. I'm just not sure that, whatever the coverage problems are, we can really fix them in a short period of time.

I want to believe that our secondary can be fixed. Then I remember the Texans had a horrible, I mean, dog butt awful secondary last year probably even worse than ours and Wade has fixed that entire defense to #1 in the league. I just don't know.

Fat Ryan can go back to Clevland for all I care, the guy sucks.

If his last name was not Ryan, he would not even be employed in the NFL.

Well, if we'd signed Joseph and then drafted, what, 5 players for the defense last season, we'd probably see some improvement, too. Not to knock the amazing job Wade Phillips has done in HOU this season.

Any chance we can get Mike Zimmer back?

Yeah, but if we lost Ware after 5 games, we'd be sunk. Even more so if McGee was forced to run the offense due to injuries to Romo and Kitna. That's pretty much what Phillips has had to endure.

Yes! :D

Seriously, the problem is not enough students of the game on defense (except Lee) and no leadership. This defense has no Haley, Maryland, Casillas, Norton, Everett, or Woodson. Those guys were all vocal leaders and they pushed their teammates to excel. Who does that on this defense?

So, when I wasn't all that excited about the Ryan hiring and was calling him the spawn of Buddy, and I pointed to his Browns and Raiders teams as not really impressing me, I wasn't just looking at who his father was and making a faulty judgment?

That's too bad.

He's a smart coach, and can do us some good, but he has to dial down the blitzing. His schemes are not Jim Johnson's.

really, Dallas sent more pressure on ELi than any game. They sent the blitz 25 times. A good DC would know that ELi is better vs the blitz and if so then don't send it. He was better vs the blitz, so if it isn't working then stop. Ryan has no idea how to change or adjust. It's been like this all season.

After the Giants game, it is easy to paint with a broad brush and say it's all on the defense.

The offense has performed poorly late in some games and cost us as well. We need as a team to figure out how to close out games whether it is Romo connecting with Austin (in which case the defense is off the hook) or the defense making a big stop.

IMO here is what we should do. We have almost all of our offensive pieces back healthy (save Murray unfortunately); we've got Austin and Fiammetta and Felix Jones looks 100%. Our offense should be fairly explosive. Ryan needs to dial back is scheme and keep things simple.

After Phillips was fired last year, Pasqualoni played a pretty basic scheme with a lot of zone and not a ton of exotic blitzing. We went 5-3 playing this way with a back up QB. I'm not saying we need to go this simple, but more in this direction. We need to be simple enough to not make mental mistakes; playing this scheme if our offense is able to put up a lot of points, puts pressure on the other side to be perfect to not have any turnovers. We simply cannot afford blown coverages where the WR walks in from 50 yards out.

I haven't studied his history closely. But if Sunday night's game is any indication, Ryan doesn't adjust to the game situation very well. There was no need to recklessly blitz Eli so much especially late in the 4th quarter up by 12 points. All that blitzing, which i might add rarely got to Eli, made it easy for NYG to QUICKLY march down the field to cut it to 5. I thought that was the key drive of the game.
