Ryan Russell pick could he be like the crawford pick? Where they draft him to play DE and possibly slide to DT if needed or atleast in the nickle? Measurable's are close.

Just something to think of. Remember Rob like's guys that can get up the field. Ryan can move for a guy his size and he played 3-4 DE in college.

It's quite hard to get excited about a player who from all indications seemed to give a half ***ed effort his collegiate career and has been labeled a career underachiever. I think we already have enough of that in Spencer.

I said this when we drafted him. Due to his poor lateral agility, but fast straight line speed and strenght. I do not believe he can excel at DE in a 4-3 defense. Given his frame and other skills, I think the only real option is for him to put some weight on and move inside.

Marinelli likes him at LE and he might get some looks as an interior pass rusher. But so will Hardy and Mincey I'm sure. There is an interview on the site with Marinelli. He really likes the kid and thinks he can fix his flaws.

That's interesting, but I'm not sure there is a lot you can do for a lack of lateral agility. It will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out. The kid definitely shows some talent. Better footwork can help him, I'm just not sold it will be enough to stay at DE.

Before I question the guy's motor, I would take a curious look at his coaching staff/position coach.

Pat Kirwan was talking about this about a month ago. Basically saying, it's near impossible to just look at film and tell if someone is lazy and dogging it. You have to talk to the coaches and ask them what the player was suppose to do on that specific play and what the scheme was designed for. He said lazy is becoming a very over-used word with the media.

From the looks and sounds of it Purdue did to him what the coaches in Dallas did to marcus spears, a jack of all trades but a master of none.

I said the second we drafted him that he was going to contend at the 3t. So yeah, I expect him to play both. DE on run downs, 3t on pass.

The knock on him is that he generally underperformed at Purdue. But what is overlooked is that he was originally recruited to play end in a 4-3 scheme, only to have the team switch to a 3-4 defense his sophomore year. Shifted inside to a 5 technique player, he was not nearly as effective. Our own Landon McCool shared some thoughts on Twitter after doing a little video review of Russell. He went back and started with his freshman year, when he was till in the 4-3.

They moved THIS guy to 5tech? What a waste… If we can get him back closer to this version… whew

OTTO Von Cool @McCoolBTB
Overall: When they had him play contain, and sort of two gap, he struggled. No surprise that if he was doing that a lot in ’14 his stock

OTTO Von Cool @McCoolBTB
But looks like a different player when allowed to explode upfield

OTTO Von Cool @McCoolBTB
hustles hard, runs to ball, good fit

So the takeaway from Landon's review is that he is a high motor guy who doesn't give up on plays and is best when he is sent upfield at the snap, using his speed and football smarts to adjust to the run on the fly. He could well turn into a really good player in the hands of a coach who knows how to properly use those kinds of traits.

Oh, hello Coach Marinelli.

This is what I was seeing. Just on the little bit of tape I saw on the kid. I consistently saw him giving chase even running all the way across the field. That doesn't speak of a lack of motor. He clearly has strength and power / speed moving forward. I believe he will be in direct competition with Crawford.

Definitely intrigued by this guy. Time will tell if the motor is scheme or not

Didn't Russell do his best work when playing end in a 4-3? Maybe his drop-off as end in a 3-4 is an indication he wouldn't be good on the inside. Of course, the responsibilities of 3-4 end are different than 4-3 3-tech in this scheme.
