I really enjoyed watching Ryan Smith play last year. What do you guys think of him?

Strengths: Possesses very good quickness and speed. Displays fluid hips and is able to stay with quicker receivers on double-move. He is quick in his pedal and shows good burst out of it. He can turn and run with faster receivers and he also shows good closing burst while the ball is in the air. He is an instinctive cover corner with good recognition skills. Takes some chances but doesn't gamble too frequently. He displays exceptional ball skills and is a natural playmaker when the ball is in the air. Gives a good effort in run support; takes solid angles and finds a way to drag-down ball carriers in space.

Weaknesses: Is vastly undersized. Possesses only decent height and marginal bulk. Gets overwhelmed by bigger receivers and will allow them to dictate routes. He struggles to make plays in traffic and is a liability on some jump balls. He does not get enough of a shove in at the line of scrimmage in press-coverage. While he's aggressive in run support, he gets pushed around by too many bigger blockers and run over by too many bigger ball-carriers.

Overall: Smith originally attended Utah in 2003 and was redshirted. In 2004, he started all 12 games earning Freshman All-American recognition after collecting 44 total tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, seven passes defended, one interception, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Smith then played in nine of 12 contests (six starts) in 2005 and racked up 27 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and 1.5 pass breakups. He transferred to Florida prior to the 2006 season and was not required to sit out because he had already earned a bachelors degree from Utah and was enrolled in graduate school at Florida. For the year he started all 14 games posting 54 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, eight pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble to earn a second team All-American (media) selection.
Smith is a diminutive cover corner with good speed and even better ball skills. He needs to improve his bulk and strength in order to match up physically in the NFL. While he's a little bit overrated due to his exceptional production during Florida's 2006 season, Smith is still an early Day 2 prospect with enough upside to develop into a solid nickel-slot cover corner in the NFL.
