I know there is a lot going on right now, coaches resigning, the talk of Dez and Murray but lost in the fray is the fact that Ryan Williams signed a two year contract with the team. What does this mean?

For one, I literally can finally see the change in Philosophy in the front office. Jerry got named the executive of the year and he deserved it. I think they are going to let Murray walk, leaving Williams and Randle under contract for the next two years, Randle is on his rookie contract, which is obviously low cost and I am not sure what the contract is that Williams signed but it is most likely Veteran Minimum or close to it. I believe Dunbar is either a RFA or FA, either way, we can find someone in the draft or an UDFA to man the 3rd spot if we don't keep him. What this is accomplishing is much what the Patriots have perfected, keeping low cost guys in positions and making them consistently compete for playing time and carries. What they have done with Vereen, Gray and Blount is impressive and don't forget they let Blount walk and go to the Steelers because they didn't want to pay him 1.5 Million guaranteed, this is the type of shrewdness you need to succeed in the NFL.

Ryan Williams is a guy they liked, he could have made the 53 player roster but got cut stayed on the PS all year, so it has been rumored that he turned down offers to go elsewhere on an active roster, whether it is true or not, I am not sure. What I do know is that he spent a year in the system working on his game, including pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield, two areas the coaching staff wanted him to improve in. The guy wants to be here, much credit to the culture both Garret and the Jones' have started to create. I think you will see Williams and Randle truly impose their will next year behind this line, I mean what back would not want to run behind these guys.

The only issue I have is so many teams scrambled for running backs mid season but yet he was still here.

I'm sure someone can give a better explanation/more detail than me, but as I understand it, all Dallas did was kept the rights to him on their Practice Squad for two more years with a "futures contract". He can be called up to the team or be signed away by another team willing to place him on their 53 man roster. He could end up making our 53 out of training camp. Depends on who we keep/sign between now and then.

Durability and blitz pickup are the two areas he needs to improve on. There is nothing wrong with his ability to run the football. He's a downhill runner with a little more quickness to him then Murray IMO. As a feature back, if he can get those two things figured out, I think he has a great chance.

To be fair, it wasn't lost in the fray. There were a couple huge threads already posted about him being signed to a futures contract. Either way. I don't think it means anything at this point in the offseason.

No, the practice squad is over. The futures contract is a regular contract for making the team this next season. They will have a new practice squad made after the final cuts at the start of the season. He may not even be eligible for that one. But either way he probably makes the squad or moves on.

If memory serves me the contract was for 2 years. I had to go back and look at some of his tape albeit it was from 2009. He sure looked quick during his VT days. We'll see more of him in pre-season. Just wondering what we do with him if we resign Murray or another big back. I guess he'll fight it out with Dunbar and one of those two will be our insurance option if someone goes down, much like this year.

They signed all but one of the practice squad guys to 2 year contracts.

The whole reason they signed Williams was to put the pressure on DeMarco. That's it. Period. End of story.

and if that is actually so.............so be it, should they go into contract negotiations with Murray with zero leverage, zero negotiating points?............if they did that they had better take back JJ recent award for Exec of the year....

the closest thing to a futures contract in sports is sort of like a minor league deal in MLB, you get to come to camp under contract if you make the big club they give you a major league contract if you make the minor league club you stay there. This secures him to the roster until he is cut unlike a PS contract which is only good during the seaons.

I want better than Ryan Williams. Better that Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar too.

I want someone who can stay healthy...Ryan Williams has not been able to stay healthy in his pro career.

And since we can not depend, from the side of his history, for Ryan to stay healthy...that would mean Randle and Dunbar getting time.

So yeah...at the very least we need to draft a decent RB or get a journymen RB via FA.
