Nope. McCray was not up to the task of reliably co-ordinating the secondary, and Sensabaugh was never able to do that. While McCray probably has Allen in physical skills, Allen understands the system better, and was brought in for that one reason. Unless McCray makes a quantum leap this year, he's likely to continue to be a great special teams player and a decent nickel safety/lber replacement. McCray was third on the depth chart at safety, and he played like it.

That, and costing a bag of peanuts to sign, too.

Im sure he understands the system, as you said, though. Hopefully, he can help the DB's we currently have learn it so that when the season begins, he can just be like another coach on the sidelines. Its one thing to understand it, its another to be able to play it.. which, in their first go round, Kiffin obviously felt Allen couldn't.

What Ryan achieved with poor depth and half the defense out with injuries was impressive. I think his firing has more to do with a lack of compatibility with Garrett's approach, with the culture Garrett is trying to create.

I think it was a mix of not delivering the takeaways and the (understandable) miscommunications we had defensively last season. Some of that was the complexity of the defense, some of it injuries, but I think they realized philosophically that the Ryan hire was probably a mistake and they moved to correct it.

That said, they must have said nice things about him, because we've got good relations with the Saints, and they scooped him up. That might not have happened if there was a bigger issue there.

They didn't even pencil him in as a starter over Matt Johnson. Be ready to be amazed.

Well then pleasantly amazed...

I think we'll see "safety by committee"--
Play the young guys, get experience, find out who can play...but use the vets in key spots.

With Wade, I heard, "we're going to mix it up, run a lot of different packages". With Ryan, I heard, "we will mix it up, get after the QB". What I hear with all coordinators, but if you can't do the one biggest thing, just forget about mixing it up. GETTING AFTER THE QUARTERBACK.
