Cowboys' Phillips using flag as a teaching tool

IRVING — Coach Wade Phillips said Monday he will talk to his players about toning down their touchdown celebrations.
The Titans returned a kickoff 73 yards after Dallas right tackle Marc Colombo drew a flag for falling to the ground after he bumped chests with Jason Witten after the Cowboys’ tight end tied the score at 27-27 Sunday with an 18-yard touchdown catch.
Aided by the penalty, Marc Mariani returned the kickoff 73 yards to set up Chris Johnson’s game-winning 1-yard TD run.
“We’ll talk about that with them, but there’s got to be emotion,” Phillips said. “If you don’t get excited about scoring, especially after coming back from 14 points down, you lose what you have. You don’t want no emotion for your team, but certainly we don’t need any penalties. And we’re not going to have any.”
Colombo told the Dallas Morning News he felt “awful” about giving the Titans a short field.
“My only intent was to celebrate Jason scoring ... not to orchestrate and intentionally hurt the team,” Colombo said.
Phillips said the team planned to send a tape to the league for clarification, but ESPNDallas.com reported the NFL ruled Monday the officiating crew made the right call...
