The Cowboys’ Marion Barber (24) tries to avoid the Titans’ Chris Hope on one of his six carries in Sunday’s loss. KIN MAN HUI/[email protected]

IRVING — Coach Wade Phillips said Monday he will talk to his players about toning down their touchdown celebrations.
The Titans returned a kickoff 73 yards after Dallas right tackle Marc Colombo drew a flag for falling to the ground after he bumped chests with Jason Witten after the Cowboys’ tight end tied the score at 27-27 Sunday with an 18-yard touchdown catch.

Aided by the penalty, Marc Mariani returned the kickoff 73 yards to set up Chris Johnson’s game-winning 1-yard TD run.

“We’ll talk about that with them, but there’s got to be emotion,” Phillips said. “If you don’t get excited about scoring, especially after coming back from 14 points down, you lose what you have. You don’t want no emotion for your team, but certainly we don’t need any penalties. And we’re not going to have any.”

Colombo told the Dallas Morning News he felt “awful” about giving the Titans a short field.

“My only intent was to celebrate Jason scoring ... not to orchestrate and intentionally hurt the team,” Colombo said.

Phillips said the team planned to send a tape to the league for clarification, but ESPNDallas.com reported the NFL ruled Monday the officiating crew made the right call...

Is the rule why I don't see players praying after a score now?

Or my laser fixed eyes failing?

Wade is like a Peewee football coach. If I had a 7-year old son, I'd love for him to play for Wade!

Someone who has rubbed real elbows with all of the recent greats in the NFL coaching arena just doesn't respond in similar manner to today's mob directed media or it's throw off fan group. To maintain respect and effectiveness doesn't mean one has to adopt an insulting and intimidating demeanor as well.

That was a bullcrap call. Wish that Wade would have the backbone to stand up and say how bad that call was. At least have some dignity and call out these refs who make bad calls after bad calls.

That's funny, just last year Wade tried to convince everyone that there was no correlation between penalties and winning or losing.

I guess it's because of the rule. Like the Ref explained it on NFL.com you cannot go to the ground or it will be judged as excessive celebration.

I think Phil Simms at game time also mentioned the problem how to differ between praying and celebrating. The Ref on NFL.com didn't go into that but made it clear that the rule is crystal clear. They can't judge intend they only judge by the rule. And therefore touching the ground it's a penalty regardless of why you were doing it. So i think even if you are going to your knee and pray you touch the ground and therefor get a penalty.

As a player you know this rule. If you have to chest bump make sure you don't fall to the ground or just DON'T do it.

Whatever you think about certain rules is one thing and you may be right. But just ignoring those rules doesn't make them go away. The Refs get payed for following the rules and not to make decessions by their gut feelings.

And fingerpointing to the Refs is not how to win games.

actually in another thread the rule was shown and the refs were wrong. falling to the ground is NOT a violation. CELEBRATING on the ground is.

The other thing that bugs me on a lame penalty like that is that the players are also allowed to jump into the stands, dunk the ball over the goal post, throw the ball at the wall, and dance on the opposing teams logo, none of which I guess the NFL deems as "excessive".

I watched that penalty over again, and still cannot believe that is considered celebrating on the ground. I could almost see it if Columbo had fallen down during the ball spike, but this was after that.

BINGO! thats why we keep getting screwed. until someone at Vally ranch has the guts to take a fine and call out the NFL ref bias against the Cowboys. nothing is going to change. this crap has been going on for years.

You don't know enough about what you see to make that call. Sorry to be so blunt.

Doesn't take a blind man to see that Dallas plays undisciplined football.
